I have found in my travels across the province that many Ulster Gaels have an intense dislike for Down particularly in Tyrone and Antrim. They are often called the Establishment team, Britain and Unionism's favourite GAA side, as they were at the forefront of the calls to abolish Rules 21 and 42. Great footballers but there is no doubt that there is a great deal of suspicion held against them amongst Ulster GAA people.

Your "travels across the province" sounds like some sort of intergalactic voyage but anyway, on my travels I havent heard of these dark suspicions. I certainly have witnessed intense jealousy. Nothing we can do about that.
I have heard from Armagh, Derry, Donegal & Tyrone folk that they got great inspiration from Downs victories that inspired them to all Ireland success. Not sure why Antrim have continually failed though. That's life Ulsterman, but not as you know it!

Deny all you want chaps but I have heard Down called all sorts of 'Uncle Toms' in quite a few clubhouses in Antrim and yes Tyrone as well.

Mournearmy, of course Barry Owens would say that Down are aristocrats
and talk them up ahead of the weekend, thats what gaelic footballers do!
Cavan are the true aristocrats, Down supporters are GAA snobs and have
this self-built mthyology about there football, as if they are 'the kingdom'
of ulster. A few great teams in the distant past, but nothing to write about
lately!
Up Fermanagh, wee peter to do one over on wee james!

Dont see what all the debate is about. I personally fancy Down this year given that Tyrone have to pass armagh and Donegal/Derry to even get to a final. Down, while inconsistent, on their day are a better team than all in ulster bar maybe tyrone and donegal at present. At the moment cavan are bottom of the pile ut have a great underage structure as shown by the last 2 seasons u21 championships.

I hope to meet down on ulster final day. Dont think anyone on other side of draw can challenge whoever comes out this side (Derry,Armagh, tyrone, Donegal)

Down supporters are GAA snobs?

I reckon Fermanagh will give you a real fight but Down should come through in the end, Down by 3.

We're snobs? Coming from a county who have only emerged in the past 9 years yet think they're it all?

With tyrone,s injuries building up and now sean cavanagh gone im starting think it wont be an easy task for the red hands. Armagh is not an easy place to come to and get a win. This news about tyrone could spur the armagh lads on now...

Yes it starting to look good for Armagh who have kept really quiet. Wouldnt be surprised at all to see them have a decent Championship. Their home game v Tyrone looks like a cracking tie and could kickstart them towards an Ulster Title.
Cavanagh is a massive blow for Tyrone and might just be too much for them. But, they have been written off before.

1176916 cacsmckilly Take it math wasn't your strongest subject at school, 9 players behind the ball would mean six in an attacking position, how many forwards in a gaelic football team?? Any takers??

Cant believe I am answering this question. Are children learning the skills of the game not told that attack begins with the last line of defence and defence begins from the last man forward? NO??

Well look at last years All-Ireland Final - The winning point was scored by the NUMBER 1 FORWARD on the field - just to remind you his name was Cluxton (The Dublin goalkeeper). Limerick have used their goalkeeper for free taking etc as have Mayo, while one of Tyrone's most potent forwards during the unbeaten National League run (up until the final vs Kildare) was none other than Peter Harte - the centre half back!

so realistically any team can deploy any number of attackers but as Donegal seem to concentrate more on defence perhaps it is time that the blanket is actually called the DUVET DEFENCE. Surely in this weather Donegal must be sweltered !!!!

You would do well to thank and pay respect to Tyrone(and Armagh to a certain extent)
for keeping ulster football on the map regarding silverware ograanddun!
1994 is a long time ago lad; the O'Neill County is still where the kings of ulster reside!
Long live the kings! Lol

I think not gatekeeper. All the Tyrone kings ran away to France on the 14th September 1607. It was called The Flight Of The Earls and it doomed the native Irish in Ulster to The Plantation and England's oppression for the next 4 centuries. It wasn't Tyrone's finest hour!
