Every team uses excuses when not successful. for the record players got all stars back then for league performances not just championship & having lived through the the 70s era i can confirm the realistic aim was to be just competitive vs the better sides in Connacht. Maybe that's hard for a loud/proud Mayo fans to accept but it's the truth.

My quarter final lineup is
Leinster champions - Dublin, Ulster champions - Donegal, Munster Champions - Kerry, Connaught Champions - Mayo.
Quarter final team - Cork, Quarter final team - Kildare, Quarter final team - Tyrone, Quarter final team - Down
Which then leads to my semi final ( Munster vs Ulster, and Leinster vs Connaught )

Semi final - Donegal vs Kerry
Semi final - Dublin vs ???????
I believe the above 8 will make up the All Ireland quarter final, with provincial champions from 3 provinces in the semi, apart from Mayo who i reckon will fall at Q Final stage.
I want to see a Kildare vs Cork match this year, and a Donegal vs Kerry match up too.
