Joe Brolly launches Scathing Attack

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

On Tyrone. In his newspaper column yesterday Joe Brolly vented his anger and disgust at players diving and feigning injury to get others booked or sent off. Though he had a go at many teams he particularly singled out Tyrone strongly criticising players Sean Cavanagh, Brian McGuigan, Philip Jordan, Peter Canavan and Colm Cavanagh as those who have used these tactics in the past. This was pretty explosive and controversial stuff from Brolly and I am sure it will not go down well at all in Tyrone. Thoughts?

Sorry roundball I don't have the link but it was the Irish Mail on Sunday and I think the column also appears in a Derry paper!

Without having read the article, I agree with every word of it. Except where I don't, in which case he's horribly one-eyed and hypocritical. But usually Brolly is fairly objective. Great respect for the man as a player, though I understand he's a reasonaly good QC also. So ultimately, though I wouldn't exactly call his article fair and balanced, I think for the most part his grammar was excellent and use of English above average. I'd give him a c+ for effort.

not a big fan of brolly but in fairness i see his point regardless of which team he goes on about it happens and is becoming more frequent and has to be dealt its one thing feigning injuries but its a different ball game trying to get one of the opposition sent off.

Diarmuid marsdens sending off in the 2003 final was indeed timely.

I have to say I really liked brolly when he first came on the punditry scene a few years ago.
He was fresh honest and very articulate.
But the last few years he's got on my t*** with his constant one-up manship on the Sunday game with Spillane and his controversial columns in papers.
He seems to want to get a bigger profile than Spillane and his jekyll and Hyde attitude towards Tyrone is just bemusing.

I thought his article was bang on. It is refreshing to hear Brolly saying it out straight. No messing. Just saying it how most see it.

You can put Irish in front of it but it's still the Daily Mail and how they love all things Irish.
I notice Roddy Forsyth is also their Scottish Soccer expert - writes for an Irish audience but still Roddy Forsyth.

Without opening the thread first, my immediate thought was:

'This guy will say anything just for the sake of it and to be controversial and have people talking about him'!!!

Will never forget Kildare beat Laois in Leinster champ years back in the Micko Days (for both of them) and before the game he was all 'Laois will do this and that and power by them etc' and then when the game was over and Laois had lost I was absolutely gobsmacked by his first comment which was: "Laois are a BAD team!".
It was at that point I realised that this man will say anything to fit the game he is watching etc!!.....no time for him whatsoever!....most people dont!

Sure wasn't he one of Tyrone's greatest defenders a few year's back?

Someone mentioned Dooher. Won a qualifier against Westmeath a few years ago when he acted up to get a player the line.

In my opinion Brolly likes the sound of his own voice. If any Tyrone man was offended by the comments he wrote lately they would need their head checked

In all fairness to that paper, Tyronetim, their GAA coverage (standard of and the amount) is a cut above most if not all other Sunday papers. All year long they dedicate a lot of news space to gaelic games - they are at least better than the other Sunday tabloids regarding coverage of gaelic games. Also their back pages are usually dedicated to gaelic games (Brolly's column in the supllement for example). Gaelic games are usually mentioned in the very back page of that paper also. People give out about the standard of the Daily mail but in my opinion the 'Irish' papers are no better regarding the 'irishness' of what they publish.
