The big difference here is what we call soccer is still the poor relation. Evidenced by the fact that we have 7 more clubs competing at Senior and Intermediate level than you. Not that its' doing us much good at present though. I won't cut'n paste your League of Ireland sites, I'm sure you're registered on them

were not doing to bad considering we have around 55,000 people, very small young population and in the likes of Four Roads, Fuerty and Oran they wouldn't know a football from a handbag. Nothing but sliotars and sticks. Wouldn't mind a more recent all-ireland considering our last one was during WW2...

Is a Roscommon man actually blaming hurling for a lack of Gaelic footballers? Hurling in Roscommon ? I wouldn't mind if ye had over 7 hurling clubs but that's just ridiculous

Why don't we just work out number of adult teams in each county and say each has a panel of 25 players. Say your club has junior and senior teams, then that club has 50 players. For example London has 24 clubs with about ten having reserve teams , so 25 x 34 = 850 players to pick from.

20 football clubs. 3 Hurling clubs. I think that means we have the smallest pick of players.

Again, I apologise for these two ceoils TheMaster and Yew_Tree trying to drag me off topic..

Anyway, in regards to the counties with the biggest footballing pick from a Connacht perspective.. The county with the highest amount of football clubs is Mayo with 44 with 2 dual clubs, Galway have 43 with 10 dual clubs which means Galway has more clubs playing football but the amount of people playing the sport is a different story all together.

It might interest one or two of ye to know that there is more football clubs in Leitrim than there is in Sligo, 24 in Leitrim and 20 in Sligo.. Again, you can't judge playing numbers on that considering the population gap.

cacsmckilly I'd agree to a point that counties in the six do have a smaller pool as it's generally only one side of the fence to pick from but you're assuming that in other counties nobody from that same side prefers to play soccer, rugby or other sports. In our county as an example the inishowen area of Donegal has been a soccer stronghold for a long time and the majority of lads from there would prefer soccer to GAA. The quality of teams and players from inishowen has improved in recent years but overall I can't totally agree with your analysis.

Doesnt the first line contradict the second line? If you consider the 'population gap' as you put it, between mayo and galway then wouldnt that indicate that galway have more people playing ths sport? But I suppose that is off topic!

An educated guess now, i'd say theres around 50 football clubs in kildare, with maybe 8 hurling

The population of Leitrim is always down as 30,000 approx. but its higher than that. The census is done on Sunday night when most Leitrim people are back in Lucan, Phibsboro and Drumcondra etc and like myself are registered as Dubs or Galway. Then at weekends the countys population swells to 1 million approx. and theres not room to move in Dunnes and 360 on a Saturday night, also due to lax passport and visa restrictions on Rossie immigrants hoping for a better way of life.

Close there sashman. There are 53 clubs in total in Kildare and 12 of those would have hurling teams with 3 hurling only clubs.

Having watched Roscommon U21 beat a strong looking Cavan U21 team in the All Ireland U21 semi final, I'd say your 55,000 population are doing alright in the football stakes. They are definitely putting in the groundwork around Roscommon, as the U21 team were effective and convincing. They face a difficult final against Dublin, who themselves were very impressive against Cork. But given the defensive solid look of Roscommon, id say Dublin will have a tight game in the final.
