Cork, Kerry, Dublin, Tyrone? - just wondering what the corelation is between it and success....or who is efficent with their numbers (Derry, Longford) and who is wasting talent? (Mayo, Meath?) sportsfan14 (USA) - Posts: 281 - 23/04/2012 13:52:25 1158160 Link 0 |

Is that by population or playing numbers Sashman thought Fermanagh had a very small pick of players? Jack_Sparrow (Westmeath) - Posts: 1039 - 23/04/2012 13:58:33 1158167 Link 0 |

Go to club links in Other on the information bar, it provides information on the clubs in each county. TheGateKeeper (Tyrone) - Posts: 2843 - 23/04/2012 14:04:15 1158181 Link 0 |

There is a big correlation between playing numbers and success. The more players a club/county has the harder each player has to fight to make their county side which means the players will generally be better. ormondbannerman (Clare) - Posts: 13473 - 23/04/2012 14:08:56 1158192 Link 0 |

To be honest, its not the size of your playing population that matters, its how you use them! brendtheredhand (Tyrone) - Posts: 10897 - 23/04/2012 14:11:41 1158199 Link 0 |
Thats true Brend, Kerry only have 30 clubs in comparison to corks and dublin, both over 60. TheGateKeeper (Tyrone) - Posts: 2843 - 23/04/2012 14:15:42 1158209 Link 0 |
You could have the biggest population in the country but unless you have the right facilities and the right personnel in place to develop talent you won't go too far. Our own county is a prime example. Meath now has a population of around 185,000 and we are as bad as we've ever been. RoyalClass (Meath) - Posts: 790 - 23/04/2012 14:23:39 1158219 Link 0 |
that was a wee bit cheeky brend, and i think your fellow county man missed the joke pig.ignorant (Derry) - Posts: 655 - 23/04/2012 14:31:31 1158232 Link 0 |

The smallest picks by some distance would be Fermanagh, Longford and Leitrim, and given their lack of silverware over the years, one could most definitely correlate their lack of success with their very small population bases!! Mayo must have a huge pick. Very big county and practically no hurling there. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2387 - 23/04/2012 14:42:21 1158249 Link 0 |

The day wouldnt be complete without the galway boys stickin the knife in. Yes it is a big county, but you need people in the county to pick from! There are almost double the amount of people in galway to mayo (130,000 - 250,000). We have the 16th highest population so achievement in terms of resources over the last while I would say we are third behind kerry, who are miles out in front, and tyrone. Obviously the most wasteful is dublin who have almost 10 times our population (1.27 million). TheMaster (Mayo) - Posts: 16187 - 23/04/2012 15:23:19 1158300 Link 0 |
