The undisputed heavyweight in local newsprint circles is our own JP Graham of the Northern Standard. In almost every match the great man has ever described, one team inevitably has a 'five minute purple patch where they hit X points without reply'. In fact, Monaghan managed to have 2 purple patches in their recent qualifier match against Derry. Meg Ryan eat your heart out! Not forgetting the fact that one team always 'gets off to a great start', that the 'fitter, hungrier and more cohesive side' came out on top, or indeed that the game was a 'thrill a minute spectacular'.

most RTE pundits: "tremenjus" - as in "they've put in a tremenjus effort in training this year" or "what a tremenjus catch(fetch)"!

After a "Schemozzle" and one man gets sent off the cries from the sideline of " ah for gods sake sure there was two of dem init ref" or if some get a takes a big hit in a league match "hes grand sure, it will toughen him up for the champtionship"

After a Draw you always hear "well the underdogs have missed their chance today! they'll get eatin next week!
Or "well the element of surprise is gone now"

I love doing my impresions of cyril farrell!!

"listen Michael!"

"these guys are good hurlers"

"chalk it down ger" (in fact he'll call the commentator "Ger" irrespective if Ger Canning is commentating or not!!)

"And he went for it Ger, HE WENT FOR IT!!!!!"

"And you'd HAVE to say"

"It's game on NOW ger"

And what about those magnificently shiny brown shoes he's been wearing on the Sunday Game this season!!

I was thinking off that also. I don't know if it is a cliche, but I chuckle when they say; "the pitch is greasy."

X team is showing great 'hunger'! The word drives me mad! 100% sure that Brian McEniff started it back in 1992 - usually 5 times in any one interview! What ever happened to good old-fashioned 'determination'?

"blanket defence"

"puke football"

two phrases normally used by spectators who never kicked a ball in their life, and would not therefore appreciate the importance of winning. watched two nights of the sunday game and listened to a sore loser by the name of pat spillane, because he has a number of all-ireland medals and allstars these new spectators fail to see through his bitterness and therefore try to adopt his ideas as their own.

L2TR:[/b].."Cooper for Wexford, looking for a team-mate, oh wait a second, he's been disposed by Joe Sheridan and its a GOOOOOOAL for Meath. Brilliant stuff there from Joe. Hold on. Whats going on now? I don't believe it - but for some reason that I am not aware of, the goal has been disallowed - What a joke decision"

L2TR... Please get your facts correct before posting responses. Cooper retired following Wexford's campaign in 2007.

Cyril: 'Its like feeding bananas to a monkey, Ger' when a full forward is winning lots of high ball - think this might have originated with Cloonan, anyone remember?

Doh!

My mistake, Per, replace Cooper with whatever the new Wexford's goalie name is.

Two that always get me: Ger Canning - "What a game, what a match!!!" Darragh Moloney - "And that's a shot round the corner from X" Don't like Darragh Moloney!! He's a soccer commentator!
