Does this mean that now a big full forward can park on the goal all the time and await a high ball in? Sounds crazy to me! Real Kerry Fan (None) - Posts: 2957 - 18/04/2012 13:47:58 1155028 Link 0 |

For those asking I think the new playing rules are effective a month on from congress. jono (Mayo) - Posts: 350 - 18/04/2012 14:34:43 1155069 Link 0 |
This is a very illthought out rule change..Just picture a midfielder has the ball and is about to launch a high ball into the square, all the attacking team has to do is get one or two tall forwards to stand in front of the keeper thus completely taking him out of the game.I can see twice as many controversial incidents this season. Its going to be one goalmouth scramble and row after another.all it needed was the existing rule to be enforced properly.. juniorbsub (Wexford) - Posts: 646 - 18/04/2012 19:20:20 1155343 Link 0 |

Finally, a place on the team for the big beer-keg full forward again!!! OffalyBigBall (Offaly) - Posts: 635 - 19/04/2012 13:34:31 1155848 Link 0 |
If a goalkeeper can't command the square at this level then he's not up to it. The goalkeeper will still be protected by the fact that he can't be touched in the square. Cute_Kerry_Hoor (Kerry) - Posts: 2518 - 19/04/2012 13:45:13 1155861 Link 0 |

I'd say Cluxton wouldn't be too happy about the rule change. He doesn't seem the biggest and most robust of keepers and I'd fancy most of the bigger full forwards against him under a high ball. Before the Dubs jump on me for this, I still think he's a quality keeper but might need a fair bit of protection this summer from the full back line!! Tir Conaill Abu, I think all full back lines are going to have to be more vigilant now with this rule change. lilywhite1 (Kildare) - Posts: 3036 - 19/04/2012 14:27:53 1155910 Link 0 |

the only apparent reason for the change is that referee's are making occasional wrong calls...........should we now look at the doing away with the point score, officials are getting it wrong on occasion here too.......if the the gaa are serious about getting things right then they have to do away with the point score or extend the posts or put a limit on how high a ball can be when a point is scored ie no higher than the top of the post would help make the decision easier for umpires and the referee....madness i know but its also pure madness to change a perfectly good rule on the square ball because match officials can't get always get the call right with that aspect of the game. Gammy Knee, The problem with the square ball rule is that it would be nearly impossible for the officials to get it right no matter how much training they have in the matter. If a ball if kicked in high and hanging how can a umpire judge whether the player is in the square or not before the ball never mind a referee 30 yards or more away. I think the GAA has got this rule change spot on. Tir Conaill Abu (Donegal) - Posts: 1677 - 20/04/2012 15:21:55 1156668 Link 0 |
Gammy_Knee I am all for protecting the goalkeepers which is why the rule was in place, but to say the "occasional wrong calls" are made is an understatement. whitenred (Tyrone) - Posts: 156 - 20/04/2012 15:38:21 1156686 Link 0 |
I actually think that this is a stopgap response to a bigger issue, umpires who are inefficient, don't know the rules well enough and are only brought along by their friend the referee for a day out at Croker or whatever stadium and to make a few bob on the side. Umpires like linesmen should be qualified referees only. Their decisions impact games hugely and this is just the GAA taking the easy way out rather than tackling the real issue. The square ball rule should not be messed with as now we will have poachers and fellas in there sholdering the keeper off the ball long before it arrives anywhere near the square. And we are now going to expect these useless umpires to make the call on that???? Dubfan Abroad (Dublin) - Posts: 282 - 20/04/2012 16:00:41 1156706 Link 0 |
Tir Conaill Abu.....why didn't they do away with it altogether if what you're saying is correct.......remember the rule will remain as is for all dead ball situations so if a ball is kicked in high and hanging how will the umpires get these calls right ?. According to several different articles I've read, it will be decided at the next Croke Park meeting either this month or next when it will come in. Some say it could be as early as the Championship. hbk (Monaghan) - Posts: 35 - 21/04/2012 15:56:00 1157080 Link 0 |
