Portlaoise last weekend

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

What do people make of last weekends event in Portlaoise. If true, its a disgrace that the Laois players are resorting to this. Their own manager is an Armagh man.

Thoughts?

Had just started new thread on this before I saw yours. Yeah, pretty infantile stuff from the Laois man but perhaps a bit over the top to be taking a 'racial abuse' charge?

Armagh County board lodge complaint vs Laois

I see the Laois lads were stoking the fire at the weekend league match.

Laois player claims Armagh are british b*****ds!

A laois player has persistently called Ciaran McKeever a "british b*****d" and shouted "God save the queen" into his face, the referee and indeed linesman spoke to the player about his persistent derogatory remarks but they never disciplined him. Surely this is a contravention of the rules by both the player and the match officials. Ciaran McKeever was subsequently sent off after an incident in the tunnel in which another remark was made by laois players, Ciaran McKeever insists he did not react as was claimed by the referee but he was sent off regardless. Ciaran refused to leave the pitch before the second half started insisting he didn't do anything wrong and only left after Paul Grimleys intervention. Can someone please let me know why we in Armagh are regarded as "british" and "b*****ds"?

Armagh/Laois/GSTQ

Can anyone clear this up? Was the "chanting" from the crowd, or was it from actual opponents on the pitch? If it was from the crowd thats one thing, but if a fellow footballer is singing GSTQ in the ear of a player from Armagh, or any of the 6 counties, in an act of provocation I honestly think the GAA should come down on them like a tonne of bricks. Now if its from the fans there isnt much we can do. Have often heard what I can only call clowns on the Hill say similar things to teams from the North. Its usually the lowest of the low that resort to this. We have nothing but contempt for these idiots. I actually pointed it out once to a so called fan that was roaring this rubbish that "they hate the queen more then you do pal"....the look on his face...it was a mix of "do they...and feck off" !! But if its the players/player......seriously, he needs to be named and shamed. That is disgraceful carry on.

Just started a post as well! Disgrace. Wan't just one Laois player but a whole host. It's racism and the GAA need a full investigation and the offenders dealt with publicly and severely.

The irony of it all a man from the Queen's County screaming God save the Queen in a South Armagh man's face. His forefathers would have been so proud.

I would not call it 'racist' abuse given than the English or British is not race. However, it is beyond pathetic what some of these Laois players have done. To be fair, they are probably not the county only players to have come up with such tripe so I would not be in a rush to gang up on Laois players though I obviously condemn it. As I said, such statements are just pathetic in this day and age (especially given that so many Irish people are very happy to move to England and other parts of the Commonwealth to take up work) and those that spout them should be pitied and as way of punishment sent back to school where they should be given lessons on the troubles, immmigration, economic history current economic ties and nefarious side of Irish nationalism.

Racial abuse of Ciaran McKeever

"It's understood that McKeever was called a "British b******" on a number of occasions by the Laois player, who is also alleged to have shouted "God Save the Queen" into his face." It's understood it wasn't just one Laois player but a whole host of the heroes had racist comments to make. GAA need to take action on this as a matter of urgency and deal with this disgrace in a very public manner. C'mon GAA grow a pair and sort racism out. I'd imagine this is common to a certain extent? And if more common, why has no one made a statement previously?

This is quite a common trend, but unfortunately here the referee and the linesman were aware of it,
I agree with the earlier poster name and shame the player....... and move on

I suppose Joe Duffys Liveline will crash with all the calls after another unsavoury incident in Portlaoise ;-)

But are Laois not managed by an Armagh man?

They'll be burning the Koran next in Portlaoise

The most worrying bit was that the referee and linesman heard it but never acted on it. It can only be conculded that they didn't see anything wrong with the remarks being made otherwise they would have punished the players involved or at the very least included the incident in the referees report. I know Ciaran personally and all his family and I can vouch that he is neither british nor a b*****d.

It's pretty pathetic really I have to say, especially with his own manager being an Armagh man.

One thing I'd like to ask posters from the 6 counties. Now I'm not pointing fingers at any individual counties when I ask this but here goes.
It happened me once playing against a Derry team in an Ulster league match where I was called a "Free-State *******". I was so bemused by it I think I started to laugh.
Friends of mine from Galway and Sligo who play at senior county level have received the same taunt when playing at various times against different teams from the 6.
Is this any worse?

The ref may not have dealt with it on the pitch so as to put it on his match report after the game leaving it up to the GAA to deal with it. What I would have done

Armagh should just name whoever it was and let him be punished by the embarrassment. I'd imagine that would be the worst sanction he could have!
