Football in Kilkenny - Is there any point?

Last year in the U21 Ulster Hurling Championship Derry failed to field a team in the first round match against Antrim. KK had 15 boys who turned up. Lets hear your tut tuts. Cavan have not got a hurling team neither has Leitrim in the National Leagues, Lets hear the tut tuts.

There was a thread about Cavan withdrawing the team and there was lots of tut tutting on it so unfortunately you don't have a point.

Have you a link to this HS team selection? wouldn't mind a look. IS it a football or hurling team?

I must say I'm intrigued by such a prospect. It would be bundles of fun.......

No point, but I dont think KK should be criticised for it. After all, they set the bar in hurling fairly high!

Like how can any team be beaten by that much in football, its such a simple game compared to hurling, speedwise, skillwise and everything. If you put up a blanket defence in football you can push any team close in it.

Liam from Dublin is corect in his earlier post:-
1. lets face it Kilkenny are a disgrace at football, but we all know most Kilkenny gaa gaels that football is a hinderence
2. on of the best footballers i had ever seen was Brendan Bolger from Kilkenny who played for London
3. there are more underage clubs playing football in kilkenny than in a lot of counties, even my own i would say.
4. what preparation was done for this game - the same as the U-21 hurlers - don't think so
5. it is easier or should be to get 20 men to be competitive at football than hurling
6. if every county took kilkenny's attitude, than we would have more Cavan's and no county hurling in the weaker counties
7. armagh is a weaker hurling county, but all, clubs, schools and co. board buy into the notion of trying to promote it, football is seen as a joke in KK and is not pushed
8. If KK don't participate in football -it reinforces this image that they are just a hurling county and football falls further behind
9. A kid from Callan, Bennetsbridge, Kilkenny town, etc can be just as good as his neighbouring counties
10. About 5/6 yrs ago Kilkenny defeated Louth by 4 points in the leinster M.F.C and a Co. Board offical was noted to say that he hoped they the 'run' would come to an end because summer time is hurling time............

Does anybody know how much money goes into the county football teams in kilkenny? It would be interesting to see just how much effort the county board actually put into the teams with funding

KK have probably one of the greaterst teams with some of the best hurlers of all times in the greatest field game in the World and there are clowns on here saying we are a disgrace and we shouldnt be allowed field the hurling team, now I am not going to pass any comment on any other county and their commitment to hurling or football, some of these posters probably dont even do anything to promote either game, let give them a little history, hurling is being played in KK since the 1700s,it is so much part of our psyche that it is what most young men with an interest in GAA want to play, they want to be Henrys and DJs and Tommys and Ollies and Eddies so its hard for football to compete when it comes to wanting to play for KK,now it might surprise some of these posters that KK people do like football and most clubs play in the championships,I think another reason hurling is such a favourite in KK is the speed of the game, over the last number of years we have had SFC matches before KK matches in Croke Park while all KK people enjoyed the games we felt the pace was so slow in comparison to hurling, now thats not a criticism of football its just we prefer the faster game, and I must say some of the supporters of the football teams who stayed for the hurling were amazed at the speed and skill of the hurlers,I have down the years met many people in Croke Park from counties who havent a great hurling tradition, they were there to see DJ and JJ and Henry and Ken and Tony and Eoin and the great men from all counties, should we deny them the pleasure of seeing the KK men playing because we are a disgrace,I think we are a credit to the GAA,we promote the greatest game in the World and I am sure there are many clubs around the country whose young men have enjoyed a visit from KK players to preaent medals and have a chat with them.I am going for a pint and we will probably talk hurling most of the night

hurling is being played in KK since the 1700s,

Im a big fan of KK now dont get me wrong - but before the establishment of the GAA cricket was the big game in KK. (amongst other places).

As regards to my comment 'Kilkenny are a disgrace to the GAA.' I was merely having a laugh, in fact I am surprised that it even made it onto the forum. A team with so many All Ireland hurling titles to their name can hardly be branded a disgrace, come on lads.

But honestly, with a population just shy of 100,000 its gone to f*ck if they can't do something in that county to get more people playing football.

I see the Kilkenny Vice Chairman suggesting Louth U21s should have let up. I don't recall him suggesting same to Brian Cody in years where their hurlers destroyed Offaly by over thirty points in Leinster championships. In 2005, if I recall they scored 6-28, not awfully different from the 6-35 scored by Louth on Wednesday. Or in 2008, when they beat Waterford by over twenty points in an All Ireland final, I don't recall him worrying that it was bad for Deise hurling!
It is not how Louth footballers treat Kilkenny footballers that needs adjusting, it is he and his colleagues on the county board treat their football!

If Kilkenny had been playing Kerry or Dublin in football I guarantee they would of had 30 on the line.

Ah now, this post takes the biscuit. Fella, it was the first round of the Leinster U21 championship, not a friendly in the sh*te and gutter of a cold January evening. You can't make any excuse for 11 players not turning up for a inter-county championship game unless of course, they had other commitments.

So mooncat i'm a clown.

I rather be a clown who cares about all aspects of our association and just pick the bits they want. We all know that the KK hurling team are great but KK gaa wise isn't if the County teams at all levels performs disgracefully - no subs is beyond a joke. Yes it has happened to other counties but it is a constant trend with KK. They have not performed at any level really for over 50yrs......

What concerns me most about this, is the fact that Kilkenny scored 2 goals against Tipperary in the NFL div 3 game on the 9th Feb 1987! Worrying times lads!

Nearly every county is dual but just a couple are successful :
1. cork
2. Galway
3. Dublin
4. Antrim - especially at club and schools level
5. Tipperary recently so
6. Offaly
Wexford
7.Limerick - footballers unluckly recently
8. Derry - at underage and schools level
9. Laois
10. Westmeath
11. Down
12. Meath
13. Armagh
14. Kerry
15.Clare

These counties can be moved about on the list , but over the last 30 years these counties have competed at various degrees of success -

cuchulainn35 you say we dont promote football.have a look at KKGAA,between 2morro and next Sun week there are nearly 50 football match fixetures in the county, most of them juvenile where football is really promoted, how many juvenile hurling matches will be in Armagh in the same period, now I wont say Armagh is a disgrace or not a GAA county because it is a great GAA county,so is KK,just because you and a few more are upset over the u21 match doesnt mean we are a disgrace,we promote hurling, football, camogie, handball, ladies football, music and community relations, last Friday night 150 juveniles registered for the coming season in my club, you say that we are not a GAA county, the volunteers who will train and look after those youngsters and take them to matches all over the county, who will not look for any expenses or rewards for their time and effort are great Gaa people and you or anyone else should not say we are a disgrrace, the Gaa is not just about Hurling and Football, its also about looking after the youth of the club, knocking on doors on cold winter nights collecting money for the lotto to raise funds for to provide facilities for the whole community, this goes on in every county not just KK in case you think I am making us out to better than other counties,we are not,we just love the GAA and do our best for the game we love.I am sure cuchalainn you are involved in every aspect of the GAA in Armagh
