Lar Corbett retires

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It really shows how well liked and admired Lar Corbett is, that people from other Hurling counties are genuinely disappointed he's retired. He is a legend and only seemed to have reached his best form in the last couple of years with more to come. It really is a bizarre decision. He seemed to have at least two more years left in him. Jackie Tyrell did some marking job on him in the All-Ireland final last year, but it must be remembered even though Tyrell shackled him so well, he still put Bourke through for the Tipp goal. He was in Australia recently for a few weeks for a friends wedding, and I just hope he isn't quitting because he has to emigrate for work.

Did he not retire just before the all Ireland final last year? Don't remember him playing in it anyway. Also thurlusblues must be a sick man this morning. All jokes aside its a big surprise he had 2/3 years left in him you would have taught. Was in teh form of his life the last 2 years but i suppose he has his own business now and thats what he needed to look after now

30 is the retirement age for inter-county hurlers. The level of commitment makes it very difficult for lads any older to do it.
His performance in the All-Ireland final 2 years ago wont be forgotten any time soon. And he always came across modestly in both his play and media interviews, never seemed to have an axe to grind or the like.
Best of luck to Lar.

Reached his prime from 2008 onwards. People forgot how well he played in the 09 final as well, 4 points wasn't too shabby. All the best Lar.

One of the few players outside of Galway that I will miss. I loved watching this guy play and at his best was unmarkable. Not just a loss to Tipp but to all hurling supporters.

There will be a lot of happy inter county corner backs this morning. Definitely two of the toughest forwards to mark in the last 5 years. No doubt someone will get the cheque book out and they'll be back in time for the championship.

Best of luck to him his hat trick display in 2010 was a sight to behold

For ignorant comment by you only "hurling". Success is relative, for Galway it's beating Tipp or Kilkenny in an all-Ireland quarter final or semi final once every 5 years or so.

You haven't a clue just making sweeping statements.

Lar Corbett, Cha Fitz and mullane are massive losses to hurling, that's the big issue here.

Can you imagine if say Bernard Brogan, Gooch and Darran O'Sulivan all retired how be a loss would they be to the football championship.

dont talk nonsense and show your ignorance of hurling moomoo. Lar is a fantastic hurler and Im sure hel be back to show Jackie Tyrell a thing or two like he showed up Noel Hickey the year before with 3 goals.
Ive no doubt Lar will be back as he loves the game and Im sure beyond any doubt that hel pick up his 3rd All Ireland medal this year.

Best of luck Lar and I hope you are back soon to win the 27th title for tipp

No one to blame for his retirement only Jackie Tyrell

Lar didnt play well in the 2011 final at all,but that happens to the best of them.he was just unfortunate that it happened to him at the worst possible time.Think all the Kilkenny fans slagging him is a bit funny actually. He was brilliant against kilkenny in the 2009 final and he gave the cats defence (including Tyrell) a nightmare 2010 final, not to mention his ridiculous tally throughout 2011 (final aside).Hope he comes back, even as a Galwayman.

Fair play the road, you're about the only one making any sense here. The tyrell jibes are fairly petty and sad considering there is a much bigger issue here. The issue being hurling and inter-county hurlers are not getting the same support network as their football counterparts.

It's crazy that Cha and Lar have retired and Mullane is on a break. They are massive losses to the game, they play for the three teams that I would rank as the top three teams over the past 4 seasons. All three have plenty more to offer to inter county hurling.

Imagine if you took a key player out of the cork, Dublin and kerry football teams. Say for arguments sake Bernard Brogan, Gooch and Donnacha O'Connor.

Killarney.87 I wouldn't take the jibes personally, it is only a bit of banter. Coming up to the final all the talk was of Lar because of the form he was in so there was bound to be a few jokes about it afterwards. Hickey got plenty of stick in 2010 and still is getting it. No doubt if Tipp are sturggling in their first few games of the championship he'll do a DJ on it and come back.

You were saying that almost everyday last year and look how that turned out... But i suppose like you said when Kilkenny had injury worries before the All Ireland they were getting there excuses in early i suppose this is just the same thing?

i don't think Hickey got much stick in fairness 2010. The one thing a lot of people would have said at the time was that he had absolutely no pace and that was the main reason Lar took him for 3 goals. Kilkenny made the sensible decision of switching him to Eoin Kelly who also has no pace. It's easy for me to say that but both players have been plagued with serious injuries and hence why their pace is gone.

I think Hurling has a big problem on it's hands with regards retaining it's star players which is a real worry. Kids of 9/10 years old in their back garden playing hurling want to dream that they are , Heny Shefflin, John Mullane, Lar Corbett, Joe Canning etc scoring the winning goal in an all ireland final. Its a sad state of affairs when only Shefflin and Canning will be playing this year of that quartet.

The biggest scoring threat Tipp have is Lar.For what its worth my belief is that the tough winter training Tipp are doing at the moment dosn't agree with Lar and I can't say I blame him. However I honestly believe that come the championship Lar will be back in the blue and gold, he's too good not to be involved.
