You do now what the GAA revenue is don't you?? 2010 I believe it was €58M so paying out €130M sounds like a smart move!!!
Which branch of the GAA took in that amount. Even at that it only covers half our esteemed friends figure for outgoings without ever paying a single Euro towards any other expense or grant.

Ticket prices may need to be increased to 70 or 80 euro per match alright. But with increased promotion and advertising i think the GAA could still aim to average 40,000 attendances at most league and championship games
You must be bringing some crowd over to portlaoise on saturday night , the average Laois support is around 3000.

As already stated, managers have very good reasons for NOT wanting official payment, we all know those reasons.
Lads, take your heads outta the sand, the GAA is a very wealthy organisation with massive sponsorship deals. Finding a mere 130mil or so per year would be no problem

130m is a piddling amount of cash. They were well able to find it to build croke park - why they cant find it to reward their players and managers is an absolute mystery.
Not to mention the amount of money that is haemorraged out of the organisation every year with this excuse of "grass roots"!
As far as I can see this money is just being squandered on equipment and facillities for these layabout youngsters who have never proven themselves in the game at all! You'll win nothing with kids as Alan Hansen once proved.
Time to start concentrating the wealth on an elite pool of players rather than wasting it on all these mickey mouse junior b outfits up n down the country.

Whiterbannas, I took this from your initial post " The GAA can well afford this and should reward their inter-county stars rather than keeping it all for themselves above in Croke Park" I just want to throw this out there for everyone: WHO ARE THE GAA? Answer: WE ARE THE GAA. There is no mythical board of directors or shareholders that are getting rich off the backs of our illustrious players. All the money that is made by the GAA is pumped back into facilities, clubs, the handful of paid fulltime positions that are required to run such a large organization. The only people I see making money off of this whole deal and who are not supposed to be are certain team managers. The GAA, in other words "US, WE OURSELVES" have been turning a blind eye to this for years. Every club that has ever done it, every county board that has done it, every member who has a good old laugh and a nod and a wink about it. Its been going on and WE let it. Imagine the impact on every club in the country if we started paying players. Who would be the first to be affected.....the Juveniles, Then club infrastructure, then everything starts to unravel and something that has been the glue for many communities falls apart and it would impact in ways we can't even fathom yet. Lets take the easier route here, Stop Paying Managers. End of story. Cut off the clubs and counties from all funding from headquarters untill they comply. Because if you think about it, thats where alot of the money is coming from to pay managers. Club members are not dipping into their own pockets....

in your own roundabout way I think you are thinking along the same lines as myself n a couple of the other chaps here; as you correctly identify, a lot of the cash is being squandered supporting these facilities, clubs, juveniles etc... these "elements" are bleeding the organisation dry and are main obstruction to dragging this organisation into the 21st century with properly run professional squads up and down the country. A good few counties should ultimately merge to really concentrate the limited talent available.
As you point out yourself, the main reason we cannot focus our resources on a small elite number of members is the constant leaking of money to irrelevant non-entities.
Its time to cut out the waste, maximise the prices and treat these players the way they are entitled to be treated, the way Dessie Farrell has always envisaged, and the way it should be.

How about getting people to sponsor managers players etc, That would fall under a semi pro system and means that the GAA does not get involved in labours laws etc. Getting a business to sponsor a ball or a match programme etc.

Horse, I don't think you got my point. We are a VOLUNTARY organization, a very unique one. That is what makes us special. The allegiance to your local club and county, it does not happen in any pro sport. The best players in the country are accessible to one and all at the club level. Kids grow up rubbing shoulders with these guys and know that they are real people. But these players also have to understand, they got there on the backs of volunteers and those that came before them did it with pride of club and county and thats all they needed. I have read many accounts of players the likes of Kevin Heffernan, Mick O'Connell, Christ Ring, Eddie Keher and the like and rarely if ever did you hear a complaint that they were not paid for their efforts. They were honored to have been able to represent. Todays players are taken much better care of than those names mentioned, hotels, trips, gear, recognition and in some cases jobs that they would not have gotten otherwise. They put in a ton of commitment and effort for a love of the game and they do reap rewards. I have no problem with GAA players making some extra cash by being the face of some sports drink or perfume but all the pay should come from the sponsor, not the organization whose volunteers got them to where they are now.

Dubfan Abroad, would you not be in agreement with Dessie Farrells vision for the future? A future where rather than being forced to play the games on cold saturday mornings, and use up valuable resources in the process, they can instead sit at home in overpriced acryllic jerseys stretched across ever expanding guts; waiting to go to the game that evening where they will stuff themselves with hotdogs and cola and sit in grossly overpriced seats watching the true elites of the game?
Surely this is what every true gael wants for the organisation? A sky sports style generation of hapless rubes shelling out ever increasing portions of ever decreasing incomes on illusionary glory?

If everything was based on that analysis then we'd still be living in the stone age with no technology.
For example away from hurling, we all the the first mobile was a great thing, a big block with an aerial. Look at it now. My point being something doesn't have to be broke in order for it to be made better. I'm sure Steve Jobs would agree...
