Dublin V Galway/Mayo since 83

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Isnt it mad to think that since 1983 Dublin have not played Galway a single time in the championship! Considering the fact that between us we have won so many Provincial Crowns in that time, we have not met once! And in my life time, I am 32, I have only ever seen Dublin play Mayo in the championship ONCE! So in nearly 30 years, between Connachts two big guns, Dublin (who have nearly 15 I think of the top of my head Leinsters) have only met either of them once!!!

Football is a funny ol game!!

i think the back door system with its "quarter finals" have put paid to the traditional inter-provincial rivalries.

Mayo beat us Master. They were subsequetly humiliated in the final by Kerry.

Actually are you aware that since that day Mayo are still trying to win their first AI in over half a century and we.....arent :)

(Why did you make this a Dubs V Mayo thing Master? The theme of the thread was certainly not in bad taste)

Don't worry Liam, we'll be meeting you guys in August this year, and the result will be different from 83 as we march onwards towards Sam!!!! :-)

When galway were in their prime from 1998-2002 they played all the big boys except for Dublin.Really wanted them to play eachother but at the moment I dont think galway would make much of a game of it.
As for the Dublin/Mayo semi final of 2006,best game ever.Watched it in a pub,and half the crowd were watching a Chelsea game. With about twenty minutes to go the whole place was glued to the Dublin/Mayo game.A real classic.

As l stated here a few days ago, Mayo no longer have any competition in Connacht..subsequently we are tailoring training to enable us to peak in August/September. There is a good chance that we will be meeting Dublin this year, and indeed over the next few years as both counties look set to dominate the next era, Where the noughties threw up the Kerry/Tyrone rivalry, the 10's should see Mayo/Dublin, with occasional efforts from Cork.

Padraig Brogan first cousin of Bernard Brogan Snr scored a goal for mayo that day that made it into the top goals ever scored there a few years back.

Please dont see this as being condesending , Its an honest question , But.. What are you basing that on ? Surely Mayo have to reach an All ireland final or two first and meet the Dubs a few times along the way. I wouldn't mind the 10's pitching up some new rivalries like Kerry Tyrone in the naughties (preferably the Dubs being one of those teams) , But Dublins all ireland could (although as a dub i sincerely hope not) be a flash in the pan too mate.

Dublin had alot of luck going their way last year , Now dont get me wrong i still believe the best team wins an all ireland year on year, I dont believe a poor team wins an all ireland (Even Cork in '10 where deserved winners and where the best team that year) , But without meaning to be seen throwing a sly dig in , Mayo havent won an all ireland since 1951 and although they have made progress last year and are seemingly going in the right direction , there is nothing to suggest that will end and a new era of Mayo dominance will come along. It may well happen , But i think your basing that Dublin/Mayo on hope rather than reality. I would love Dublin to go on and win more all irelands , And they could well do that with the young team they have now and so on ,

Dublin could well go another decade or two without winning another one such is the unpredictability of GAA and sport in general. Maybe a Donegal , Derry or Meath could be the new challengers to Kerry like Tyrone cause lets face it Kerry are still the greatest GAA side out there. Ideally my team , my city Dublin will go on and win a few more all irelands but its about taking each year as they come and not looking too far ahead, I'm sure Mickey Harte in 2002 and Tyrone fans didnt think they where set for a successful run stretching 7 or 8 years and where gonna be Kerrys biggest rivals throughout them years , That rivalry developed over years of success from the two sides. The bigger picture for me in Dublin regaining Sam. That is a mammoth task and not many teams do it. The bigger picture for James Horan and yourselves is like ours last year and under Gilroy thus far , Simply winning the damn thing. If yous do that and kick on , and ourselves kick on also , then it will be a new rivalry like Tyrone and Kerry , But rivalries like that develop over time.

I certainly wouldnt put my eggs in my Dubs basket and even contemplate an era of Dublin dominance .. Or era of dominance for anyone else for that matter. The most important thing for the 32 teams on the island right now is the league of 2012. the championship is too far away at the moment , thats the bigger picture , we all have dreams and ambitions , I dream of Dublin dominance but for now , Kerry on saturday is the most important thing , If we go on to dominate over the next 10 years and new rivalries surface , great , But if not , ourselves like everyone else will strive to dominate ..
