Tyrone V Derry - McKenna Cup Final

enjoyable game some of the tyrone new boys hughes mattie donnelly and even though they have been around a while murphy and mccarron had strong games too. however derry dont look near it especially their keeper half back line and midfield. though its early in the year to be promoting tyrone and denouncing derry. whilst harte has blooded the new boys with varying degrees of success youd still have to ask if hes addressed last years woes. conor gormley will still be required and probably ricey too on last nights evidence. the full backline are all nice footballers with ball in hand but i have severe doubts about their ability to actually defend. whilst kickout strategy and the ability to deal with the blanket looks as absent as always. peter harte looked seriously at sea in the first half and only the sending off stopped derrys ability to get good ball into their half forwardline in the second. he will do well in an open game ala roscommon and armagh last year but in a blanket he doesent count. so whilst weve uncovered potential players for the league and we look fitter though i hear training has been stepped up for the first time since 2005 id still worry that against a big mobile fit kildare we wont have a plan B.

Decent game on Saturday past, somewhat spoiled by the harsh dismissal of James Conway.

Plenty of positives there from a Tyrone perspective - for a 40 minute spell we played some decent football there, and some of the less established players are clearing developing & progressing nicely.
Plenty to work on as well.

We move onto Kildare next with cautious optimism. We've been dealt a tough opener and I wouldn't have the confidence that I expressed last week on this page about us getting a positive result here. Nonetheless Kildare will know they'll have a game on their hands come Saturday evening.

@ EnolaGay - have always enjoyed your input on hoganstand relating to matters Tyrone. However you seem to have a little dark storm cloud following you around these days. Lighten up, and less of the pessimism.
No serious Tyrone fan is expecting an AI this year, but promotion in the league, coupled with an Ulster Championship in the summer and the influx of 4 or 5 younger players into the starting 15 will constitute a very good year for Tyrone. This is readily achieveable & will set up us nicely for a tilt at Sam in 2013 & 2014.

One thing's for sure - IF Sam is back in Ulster again in the next few years - it will be in Tyrone.

redhandmacca - Ah its just the January blues, I'll lighten up one the sod is dry and the sun is out!!

I just get annoyed by some Tyrone followers who seem to think we are certain contenders for the All-Ireland and destined to dominate football for the foreseeable future. We were as good as Derry were bad on Saturday night, and up until the sending off we looked very very ordinary, I think everyone would agree with that.

Like yourself, I hope that 4 or 5 younger players get a start in all League/Championship games this year, they need to have faith shown in them - much like Mickey stuck by Peter Harte after his poor performance v Donegal last year, which has turned out to be a great call as it would have been easy to presume he wasn't up to the mark and forgot about him. I hope Mickey shows similar faith in players like Mattie Donnelly, Ronan O'Neill and Kyle Coney, giving them a lot more gametime than they would be use to. No point playing them for one game, then benching them for two.

I don't think we will win the Ulster Championship this year, and I'm pessimistic we will get promoted from Div 2, but I'm prepared to eat my words (and will be happy to do so) if we do achieve either! KHL!

Brolly, Unless Derry have another 15 players to bring on i can't really see Tyrone having much of a problem in two weeks time. It must be really disappointing to be talked up so much in 2012 and then get played off the field by the auld enemy, bloody Tyrone again eh?

i think if derry can keep 15 men on the pitch they will certainly put it up to tyrone although i watched the match saturday night tyrone in fairness looked the stronger side in the second half they were able to push forward quicker and move the ball with pace were derry seemed to be using to many hand passes which at times seen them been caught out imo anyway..

don't worry Derry worry about yourselves and Armagh first round of the championship i hear they don't like you lot either. You might have changed your tune by the third wk of feb when you haven't got a point in the league #redhandsrelegation

Thought we were poor enough prior to the sending off. Hard to know how we would have faired - Derry had a good start and presumably would expect Tyrone would have clawed back had Derry retained their full complement but we ceratinly were assisted.
Which Tyrone is it first 20 minutes or second half? Early days Tyrone ceratinly coldn't be considered contenders on showings to date - definitely WIP.

What about SON's point on the end line - he prefers his angles more acute...specialism now.
