For obvious reasons I don't want to tempt fate, and I mean no disrespect to Fermanagh, but it would reflect rather badly on Ulster Football if a Division Four team were to win the Ulster Championship. Even if they surprized Down and Antrim they would face one of the strongest Ulster teams in the final. As someone said above getting out of Division Four is likely to be their top priority. How do people rate their promotion chances? kickpass (Down) - Posts: 208 - 17/01/2012 11:59:39 1094963 Link 0 |
Firstly I don't think anyone on here would suggest that Fermanagh are some sort of shoe-in for an Ulster title - it was a conversation starter about Fermanagh being an outside bet at the bookies and that perhaps they will ruffle a few feathers if they get the wind in their sales. Secondly, 9 out of 15 of the current fermanagh panel started against the Down team that Fermanagh floored in the Ulster Championship in 2009 - so they are 'capable' with management and incentive of beating anyone on the day. Making blanket announcements about the innevitable collapse of Fermanagh or the absolute certaintly of the winner wont hold much water - point of fact - Fermanagh have contested as many Ulster finals has Down have in the last 10 years. Based on form you would throw your hat in with Down this year but they are notorious for choking - not just in the 1st round of Ulster but in recent All Ireland finals. The only thing that is certain is uncertainty. whosyourdaddy (USA) - Posts: 9 - 17/01/2012 12:15:13 1094975 Link 0 |
well down and wee james would need to take a long look at themselves if Fermanagh beat them, don't forget this is the same Fermanagh team who were at war with each other last year you think 10 fellas can walk in to a dressing room and alls forgiven and swept under the carpet? Don't get me wrong Fermanagh can win division 4 and compete well in ulster but there will be no fairy tale story, Antrim have Andy Ward and Paul McFlynn in training them getting more professional in their set up and have the players to give a match to anyone, if cj gets fit and big brother kevin comes in - now there's your dark horse. brolly_4_pres (Derry) - Posts: 356 - 17/01/2012 13:29:04 1095040 Link 0 |
Looks like Canavan is having the Martin O'Neill effect and I don't think many Ulster Gaels would begrudge Fermanagh a bit of success. They play a lovely open brand of football and in this big guy Quigley have a potential star on their hands; he certainly terrorised Antrim with his size and ability. Onwards and upwards for Fermanagh. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9837 - 17/01/2012 13:30:20 1095041 Link 0 |
Agreed - no one is talking fairy tale endings here - but we have to be pragmatic. Fermanagh are yet to field their starting mid-field - Sherry is about to return to the middle of the park and McGrath is on the mend by all accounts - Canavan says he should be back for the League campaign. These two fella's made McGrane and company look like under 21's in the Ulster final and they still have the potential to deliver if the side has some momentum. They also have a full back line which is arguably the best in Ulster. I'm also with you on Antrim having some great talent yet to see the mix and I think they are keeping their hand well hidden for the time being - we will know where Antrim are going only when we see them in the league but they really have been putting it up to the bigs guns lately and thats a great thing to see. It's fair to say there is no better sporting buzz than the Ulster Championship at its height... all to play for. whosyourdaddy (USA) - Posts: 9 - 17/01/2012 13:59:11 1095082 Link 0 |
Fermanagh certainly deserve an Ulster Crown and GOD could well be the Man to bring the Ernesider's the Anglo Celt back to Brewster Park. Tomorrow nights meeting of the Master and Pupil @ Healy park in the McKenna cup will be interesting . fortyfive (Tyrone) - Posts: 5929 - 17/01/2012 14:08:27 1095094 Link 0 |
It should be an interesting and telling encounter - I would still call Tyrone as firm favourites - even when they are in a rebuilding phase they are capable and dangerous - one of the great country teams to watch. Regardless of how the ernemen do were still only running warm up laps and neither manager will read much into it - but its exciting to see The Emporer vs Vader :-) whosyourdaddy (USA) - Posts: 9 - 17/01/2012 15:54:17 1095221 Link 0 |
Fermanagh are were they should be, the 9th best team in Ulster and this will not change. I do like Canavan and it's good that he's started at the bottom as the only was is up. Tom1916 (Armagh) - Posts: 2001 - 17/01/2012 16:23:41 1095268 Link 0 |
Tom it was only a few years ago we had the beating of ye in an ulster final. If we had brought our shooting boots on either of those days i do believe we would have won. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 17/01/2012 16:30:21 1095275 Link 0 |
A good response to a trolling remark GotMilk - indeed it is fair to say that the best Fermanagh team ever beat the best Armagh team ever - and send Sam back to Croker back in 2003. whosyourdaddy (USA) - Posts: 9 - 17/01/2012 19:02:18 1095454 Link 0 |

25/1 to win ulster .I dont think they will win it, but might get to a final. each way its 1/4 odds to get to a final. some online bookies have them at higher odds ,football its a funny ould game. AthCliath (Dublin) - Posts: 4347 - 17/01/2012 21:01:15 1095600 Link 0 |
Can't see them beating Down who will be playing 3 divisions above them in the first round, think they will be happy if they get promoted and have a run in the qualifiers. Down 2 win ulster should have a easy enough passage 2 the final but you just never know in ulster. Pukefootball (Monaghan) - Posts: 377 - 17/01/2012 21:31:35 1095642 Link 0 |

Guys it is very dangerous to get carried away during a good Dr McKenna cup run!!! Brolly (Monaghan) - Posts: 4472 - 18/01/2012 15:48:05 1096013 Link 0 |
Well I was simply saying some vacant in response to something vacant. Fermanagh need a few years to build a real challenge to the main players - it wil take time and comitted attitudes from the team and manager. The McKenna cup is a trial and error run out for the manager - lets face it - thats what its used for. I doubt Peter canavan fo all people will read in to this competition apart from testing various players and structures. But in the long run - good luck to them - it would be great to see the wee county come up trumps again. Long way to go but they have the talent if they can rebuild. whosyourdaddy (USA) - Posts: 9 - 18/01/2012 20:29:25 1096252 Link 0 |
