Just to clarify. Drogheda has 1 rugby club (Boyne) and 5 gaa clubs (Wolfe tones ,St Nicks ,O Raghalies ,Newtown Blues, Oliver Plunkets)
7 if you include St Colm Cilles and Naomh Martin which are on the outskirts.
The GAA has the balance of power.

Yep, I know a good few Munster fans and they say that in recent years there's no problems getting tickets for Thomond Park outside of the really big knockout games in the Heineken Cup.
Gigoer you'd want to get your facts straight.

Demand has dropped due to recession and as many people cant afford paying 30+ for a ticket not to mind food, drink, petrol etc a bit like it has for gaa games.

Not in Limerick anayway. 11 Rugby clubs in Limerick with 67 GAA clubs. Not much left to explain.

Not really, rugby is king in limerick city. not so much in the rest of the county but the city is dominated by rugby

its not realy there is more gaa clubs in the city then rugby but there are far more soccer clubs then any other sport there,
munster is the big brand name pushed in the city as its in your face every where you go from pubs mainly but people actualy playing the sport is not big numbers theres a real culture of going into town on a saturday shopping in the morning and then going the pubs to watch the munster matches down in limerick its a day out that way but in terms of clubs and people playing the sport its nowhere near what its percieved

munster support has definatly hit a platauex as when they were winning heineken cups tickets were very hard to get for thomond park games where as over the last couple of years a major decline in interest to go to matches has hit them,im allowing for the recession in this before ormond bites my head off but magners league games attract nobody anymore to thomond park

you must be joking or else you haven't checked your facts. I've brought the ould fella to Thomond Park 5 times over the last 12-24 months and only ever managed to get seated tickets once and always had to settle for making the pure 70 year old duffer stand on knackered knees on the Terrace for 2 hours instead of being in the stand, such is the demand for tickets in Thomond Park

im in limerick a lot with work and beleieve there is no oroblem in the last year or two getting tickets for any magners league or heineken cup group stage matches,
a home quarter final is when the bandwagon starts rolling down there.they were in the challenge cup last year at home in quarters and the ground was empty.
theres no problem getting tickets down there before matches any of the pubs such as the locke bar,the curraghower or the strand hotel you will get them easy

Tickets have been much easier to get the last few years but thats been due to the recession where limerick has been really badly affected. WRT getting tickets easy, you could say that about any game in most sports where if you know where to go to you can find plenty of tickets dispite a game being "sold-out"

yes but the ground only holds 24 thousand big differance to other sports with bigger capacitys

Considering im playing with a club in limerick city at the moment thats untrue, there is big numbers playing rugby in the city(im with 1 of the average sized clubs and we've 70+ adult players) and the senior clubs field 3 teams and most could field a 4th if there was enough teams to play against from outside the city

Rugby is pushed because its followed by everyone in the city, numbers are very big underage and there is an obvious drop off like all sports in the drinking smoking girls ages of 17-21

gioger soccer is a far superior sport to rugby.. and atleast most soccer fans have actually watched and played the sport all their lives unless rugby fans where it is completely new and barely any of them have played it

So how did people who attend rugby games(or any sport) become fans in the 1st place. if supporting rugby is "completely new" then how did ireland get crowds of 40000+ back in the 70s/80s and when the first ever club rugby league began in 90 crowds of up to 10000 attended club games in cork, limerick and when the top players from these teams started playing more and more games with munster rather than garryowen or shannon more and more fans and any new fans attended munster games rather than shannon/garryowen

Soccer is a superior sport, in your opinion which is a key point. Yet you dont say why its "so superior". Why do you think that? Got anything to back up why soccer is so superior?

I disagree ffgg. Rugby is a a mans game like the GAA, however soccer is a little bit effeminate to say the least with their diving and poor me when they fall after being "touched" by another player. shure God help us if they got a flake of a hurley they wouldnt bee seen ever again.

Excuse me womens lib, but Id go so far as to call soccer a ladies game as in dont toss my hair ,dont let my socks fall done and please keep the cameras focused on my brilocreme hair

what a load of sissies!! and then a nil v nil scoreline what a bore yawn!! Gaa first then rugby after all they are physical mens games not pass the ball to me please and for heavens sake dont let anyone touch my new yellow or blue boots. for Gods sake!!!!!! Thank God the hurling season is back so we can all watch a real mans game.

Thurlesblues.where have you been the last ten years?diving and feigning injury has crept into the gaa in a big way.Just look at your man Boyle in last years semi final v Dublin.got a tap in the chest and went down like a ton of bricks.Hes not the only one either.
I admit that many soccer games have long spells where absoloutely nothing happens, and I would personally get more excitement watching a rugby or Gaa match, but the days are gone when gaa people can lecture soccer people about diving etc.

Im not talking about Galic football or "throw the ball" as it is now known as or glorified basketball the road1

What about john gardiner in the 2004 Munster final?dan the man gave him a tap in the chin and gardiner fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes. Its not as bad in the hurling in general ill admit but it still happens and with this sinister win at ALL costs menatlity that has crept into our games it is only going to increase.

ormond your actually having a laugh if you think rugby is anything close to soccer or gaa in terms of popularity...you know participation numbers actually show what sports are truly popular..rugby's popularity is largely a bandwagon thing and you are naive to think it isn't....you do realise rugby games are more about the day out then the actual match...thats why its so popular amongst women..soccer is a superior sport cause it is the biggest sport in the world...it is the hardest sport in the world to 'make it' while john hayes was able to become one of irelands most capped players ever despite the fact he started playing rugby at a very late age...also soccer and rugby have no comparison in terms of the passion of the fans and in terms of actual skill

i don't mind watching rugby myself it's just i can't stand the bandwagon element in this country...your arguement however is stupid...rugby is a sport with very little going on in it...at least soccer is a difficult sport to play at the highest level and is far more physical than you make it sound...yeah hurling is good except the fact that only two teams can actually win the bloody thing!!..most games are awful with the exception of kilkenny tipp games

why are the players so much skinnier and lighter than football players if it's such a mans game thurles?

Rugby is actually a highly skilled game, watch any super 15 game or the top heineken cup games and you will see some real skill. Im being very serious when i say rugby is nearly as popular as soccer/gaa. Seems to be a well believed myth here that rugby is a bandwagon sport. Just because its a rival sport to the GAA doesnt mean you have to ridicule rugby with childish arguments, you dont see posts ridiculing hurling or gaelic football on the main irish rugby forums

Ever been to thomond park when munster are playing?? Fans are as passionate as any soccer fan.

This and 1 or 2 other GAA only forums are the only forums ive seen the viewpoint that most followers of rugby in ireland are "bandwagoners".
Rugby has plenty going on it, very exciting and very difficult to play at the highest levels.
ffgg, you call my argument stupid well many of the arguments used by anti rugby people here are very stupid like "i hate rugby as its played by a few posh people in dublin" now thats a stupid argument

I agree with ffgg.hurling is a fantastic sport (the best in the world in my opinion) but the championship is just godawful.Ffgg says only two teams can win it.Well between 2006 and 2008 only one team could win it.We have it good now that there is a challenger.Sean ban said there on seo sport he reckons that the cats will do the 5 in a row now.Wouldnt bet against it.
Sports need to be competitive to help viewershipwhich brings me to my next point/question.what does "overtaken" mean?Does it mean player numbers,or attendances? What would ye prefer,to have very few Gaa players and full stadia,or loads of Gaa players, and half empty stadia,if ye had to choose.
