Martin "Rambo" Gavigan.

Played ball in New York with an Armagh lad. I can't remember what his real name was but everyone called him Doink cos if you went near him you bounced off him.

Plenty of Meath men getting mentions on this thread, no surprise there, we're a hardy bunch, just ask the Dubs :-) Ah no but in fairness I am a bit surprised nobody has mentioned Darren Fay when talking about Meath men, the lad was tough as aul boots and he was a very good, honest competitor. Outside the county its hard to think of anyone who hasn't alreay been mentioned on this thread.

When it came to tough meath men Htaem, you could be sure they were met head on by men as hard as teak from the capital!!

One thing is for sure, you wouldnt get a Dubliner or Meath man complaining or minding themselves from the big hits!!!!......then along came laois for a flash in the pan and made the province look soft!!

Gabriel (Fuggy) McKenny, many people in Louth will remember Fuggy during his playing days with Ardee St.Marys. These days you'll find Fuggy officiating at games within the county, he often officiates at inter-county level as well.

Seanie Mcmahon for what he did in the munster final of 95. Playing on with that injury when all the subs were used. Now thats hard. Also Brian Lohan and Colin Lynch. Them Clare lads were Hard men. Tommy Walsh in todays games is by far and away pound for pound hardest man in Gaa. He gives it but can take it. Puts his hand up were its there to be broke with out flinching.
In Football, Peter Canavan was a tough man. Darren FAy another who could hit hard and take a belt but hurlers are far tougher and harder in general

i think alot of people here are confusing dirty players with hard men. to me a hard man is a tough hard but clean player who can take punishment and put his body on the line. alot of the players mentioned here i would describe as dirty.. some of them could dish out alot of punishment ...but couyld they take it.

a few of those kilkenny hurlers mentioned dont play within the rules and get away with it all the time

now darran o sullivan is a fair player and very skillful. he takes an enormous amount of punishment during every game and comes back for more.

breff,

One is forced to stoop so low when all talk of Dublin stops!!

I shall start another thread on Dublin, only I fear it will be sabotaged again by unscrupulous individuals and be locked!!

Well my stars I'm sitting here in agreement with you about the Laois men Snuf, we seem to have finally found common ground. Always found their fans and player were far to fond of b*t*h*n and moanin rather than just taking the hits and hits and getting on with the bloody game, could be just me though.

During the inter county "off season",its not a bad thread, just so long as the people posting above know that theres a a difference between being a hard man and a violent thug.

I'd have to go for Mick Lyons of Meath in football and John Power of Kilkenny in hurling.

The old man (who is a lot more "experienced" than myself reckons the 2 hardest Kilkenny men were Paddy Prendergast and Ger Henderson. Neither were dirty but if you hit them you'd know it was a mistake....

special mention to Philly Larkin who lost all bar 3 of his front 16 teeth and had 16 stitches before an all ireland U 21 final vs Galway when Galway broke early from the parade and ran through Kilkenny Philly got a belt in the mouth, got his stitches and played the game. Kilkenny went on to win by 8 points.

All hard men but none and I mean none as tough or obdurate as Roy Keane.

Trixy,as I said above theres a difference between being a hard man and a violent thug. Lets hope the next time youre playing a game against someone you dont like,he dosent break your kneecap.
