Conor Mortimer joins Parnells

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I see Conor Mortimer is the latest players to join up with Parnells. They now have 6 players from other counties playing with them. Should something be done to stop this?

As an outsider looking in, I think this is an interesting case. I don't think anyone could quibble Mortimer joining a Dublin club after getting a job in Dublin, and therefore likely living in the city, rather than enduring a cross country hike back and forth to Mayo. Quite how this will affect his inter-county career is another issue. The fact that the job is with Parnells is the interesting point and raises questions such as: has he got the job because he is a GAA star? Or has he got the job because it would strengthen the Parnells playing squad? I don't know. They are questions that only the club can answer. Had he got a job other than with Parnells, then I don't think anyone could complain with him joining the club. Although that does raise the issue of whether certain Dublin clubs are getting all the top non-Dub players and other knock-on potential controversies!
The issue of non-Dub players is certainly going to be one that is more prevalent in Dublin than most counties, simply because of the work situation. I think it depends on which six counties are represented on that Parnells panel. If the six were Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Mayo and Donegal then it would seem an obvious solution that the players play for a club in Dublin rather than hike back to their native counties, particularly if they are working / studying and living in the city. Although I would guess the six counties represented are not quite so far flung!

st galls in antrim do the same thing in my opinion. I think they have won the last 11 or 12 championships, something should be done to stop this as there is about 30 gaa clubs in belfast and the players should be spread out for the sake of true parish competitivness.

On another note the Ballinderry team, current Derry SFC, is half made up of boys from Tyrone ;)

Well he would certainly be a serious addition to the dublin forward line. He would obviously walk onto the dubs team as they have a very weak group of forwards. Also, with the emergence in mayo of some of the best young forwards in the country - freeman, doherty, o'connor - maybe conor is thinking he may struggle to win his place back. There could be something in this

Sure last year Fennell transferred to Vincents and the majority of Dublin posters were telling us that there was nothing wrong with it as far as they were concerned. What's the difference between that case and this? Neither of them are playing for the clubs they grew up with.

Mort just wants to experience playing top flite football for once before he retires for not being good enough!!

Who can blame him or any other country lad for wanting to play football among successful players in a succesful county and get out of the quagmire they are in at home!!.....but they should have to pay a fee or something!!

Agree, these non-Dublin players have made very little difference to Parnells. Parnells seem to be building from the top down! They have a lot of Juvenile officers etc they are no great shakes at any age level, just yet but only time will tell. But they have a very impressive setup, a progressive executive, basing themselves in St Davids and working very hard with local schools, providing facillites, training, mentors, gear etc etc I'd say a few adjacent clubs are getting uncomfortable.

Well Parnells are the wealthiest club in Dublin. So a few Michael Jackson T shirts wont set them back too much.

Thats a good point on the matter. Fair enough he's taking a job in Dublin not a thing wrong with that, but when someone joins a club and then gets a job with that club questions may have to be asked.

Well 3/4 of them are from Laois, another from Wexford and one from Aramagh. The Laois and Wexford lads would be no more then an hour from Dublin and will be traveling back to train with the countys anyway so it not going to cut down on much travel anyway, plus during the intercounty season they wont be training with there clubs very much anyway.

Colm Begley them last year wile he was in college, i taught that you couldn't join a club in another county if you were in college how did thay manage that?
