1048928 I give up lads there's people on this forum saying Joe mcmahon is a better footballer than Sean cavanagh , what a joke.
There are a number of reasons why I believe that Joe McMahon is a better footballer than Sean Cavanagh.
1. Joe is more versatile and can and has played most positions. 2. Joe is more consistent in his performances 3. Joe's bottom level is higher than Sean's, i.e. when Joe is not playing to his best he generally puts in 6/10 performance. When Sean plays badly he plays very badly. 4. Joe works harder than Sean 5. Joe has great vision and is an excellent kick passer of the ball. Sean doesn't pass at all 6. Sean's game is generally about soloing on the charge and the requisite dummy. Joe's game is more varied and he carries out more of the skills of the game to a better standard than Sean. 7. Joe always looks like he has time on the ball annd indeed he got MOTM against Kildare in the NFL at full back and I don't think I saw him sprint once such is his ability to read a game.
I watch Joe McMahon play virtually every club game. I have also watched Sean Cavanagh on a number of occasions this year playing with his club, the Moy. I missed only 1 Tyrone game this year and most of them every year. At all times a neutral could tell that Joe was a county footballer, a cut above most of the rest, yet Colm Cavanagh looked a better player for his club than Sean and in fact Ryan Mellon was probably the stand out player for Moy all year. It all depends on what you look for in a footballer. I look beyond the surface and look for intelligence and the ability to make the right choice in the majority of occasions and I have no hesitation in stating that in my view Joe McMahon does this more often than Sean. That's not to say I don't rate Sean, merely how much I do rate Joey

You can give all the reasons you like but it still won't make Joe a better footballer than Sean cavanagh never ever. Sean cavanagh is the heartbeat of this tyrone team for nearly ten years now if he plays well tyrone win. When tyrone come to croke park the main player every team they face fears is Sean cavanagh . The man is class and will go down as the best player of tyrones great era.

Despite Dublin being worthy champions this year, it would be a complete joke if either of their midfielders get an all star. They were beaten in midfield in every single game (except Laois).

I would not say Sean Cavanagh is a better footballer than either of the McMahons.
However, I wouldn't go to the other extreme and call him the heartbeat of the Tyrone team over the last 10 years.
There's been many great players with Cavanagh being one of them. Jordan, Dooher and McGuigan are all his equal in terms of contribution to Tyrone over the years with McMenamin, Gormely and Mulligan close behind. Stephen O'Neill stands out as being the marquee player for Tyrone from 2003-2009 and if you count Canavan in this debate, then he'd raise the bar again.
As for the thread. My All Star team would be as follows:
Cluxton; McGee, O'Carroll, Fitzsimons (not nominated so Foley); Bolton, Lacey, Cassidy; Sheehan, McAuley; Flynn, Brogan, Cullen (not nominated so O'Sullivan); Cooper (POTY), Connolly, Brogan.
Quite amazed the number of people giving Doyle a midfield AllStar - quite amazed that he has been nominated in the first place. Let's be honest, he was injured a lot of the time, particurly in the Meath and Donegal games where he really looked to be playing through a lot of pain. That itself was heroic but his contribution to Kildare's year was minimal compared to Foley, McGrillen, Bolton, Leper and O'Flaherty I thought. I wonder are Kildare supporters surprised to see him in so many teams? If they're being honest, I would think they would acknowledge the injury he was carrying all summer restricted him a bit.

Good man loyal i was getting worried there for a minute. I hear what your saying about the other tyrone players and o neill is class but he was only a sub in 03 class in 05 but I had retired 08 only to be asked back when they had reached the final and didn't really do much on the day. Whereas cavanagh has been an ever present since 03 and imo there most important player the last decade.

realdub, Mightn't want it as much as others and wouldn't be hung up on it. But most people even if they say they couldn't care less, secretly like recognition for hard work and talent in their chosen field no matter where it comes from.

No bother AthCliath, I guess I talk to players that are in the Cluxton mode, its the way I'd like players to be in an ideal world. I personally did'nt care that I never got one!

Well you did ask me to provide reasons that I thought Joe is a better footballer than Sean, and I gave you quite a few. The McMahon's are victims of their own ability. Joe would never have played full back for his club until forced to by Tyrone, the same applies for Justin. As a result of Tyrone's inadequacies these two lads are forced to play in the full back line. Could Sean Cavanagh play at half back? could he play at full back? The answer simply is no as he does not have the ability to do so. The reason teams fear Sean is because he is good at running at them, a great skill but only one skill. As with Loyal you are entitled to your opinion, but can you give me the reasons why you think Sean Cavanagh is a better footballer than Joe McMahon? For Loyal you can add Justin into that as well

Does this mean Joe is a better footballer than the gooch cause the gooch could never play full back? So all Sean can do is run at players? My god will someone from tyrone tell this fella to stop talking .... Please. There's a guy in our club who plays junior b he can play in all positions even in goal, does that mean he's a better footballer than Sean cavanagh ?

It means Gooch is a better forward than Joe and that is it. Maybe forwards are the only ones who play football? I would say the gooch could play in the full back line, maybe not get an all star nomination, but I have seen him tackle, something Sean couldn't be accused of too often. Maybe it just shows your narrow view of what a footballer is. Would you say Karl Lacey is a better footballer than Sean Cavanagh? Sean Cavanagh's forte is running at defenders, not much use in a packed defence therefore he is essentially nullified, something that the top teams have caught on to in the recent past. As regards your junior b footballer, has he played senior county football in these positions? or has he been nominated for an all star in all these positions? How many players do you know that have been nominated for All stars as a forward and a defender? Tell me the reasons why you think Sean Cavanagh is a better footballer!!

Clondalkin - This Omagh fella is promoting the McMahons because they both play for his club team - Omagh. He is also prob feeling a bit down now as Omagh were just put out of the Tyrone Club Championship by Dromore so his Club loyality is blinding him.
