Do you wear the green of Ireland and sing Irelands Call at our rugby games?

Just wondering why so many tricolours are displayed for Ireland rugby matches. Surely when the team are ashamed to sing the national anthem of that flag its an insult.

Its all getting too much aside from the usual x-factor/got talent shows, the usual reality TV shows we have come dine with me plus the Irish version, the aprentice both Britand Irish versions, Eatsenders plus Eastenders with a 60 sec delay for the "Irish" channels. Celebrity Chef, Master chef, Ramseys Kitchen Horrors, how about an Amanda Knox thing "I'm a Celbrity Prisoner get me outta here!", or how about "Rescue an Irish bank". The problem is we are all brain dead, you then flick onto the news and these ghosts appear on TV pretending to be politicians.

Oh hold on a second, you sing Amhán na bhFiann? Glorifying the murder of innocent British security forces? :O :O

RKF - who do you think you are or who gave you the right to speak for the Irish team.
You know as much about the Irish team as a chicken does about flying.

Not speaking for the Irish team, speaking about them.

Sergant_Slash:
The chorus of the Soldiers Song is the established National Anthem of the Irish Republic NOT the full version. There is No mention of England at all.

Soldiers are we,
whose lives are pledged to Ireland,
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave,
Sworn to be free,
no more our ancient sireland,
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the "bearna baoil",[fn 4]
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal,
'Mid cannon's roar and rifles' peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song

That indeed could be sung by anyone in this country, if they cared to read the damn thing. The other three verses are part of a Rebel song - they are not the National Anthem. There are more mistruths and myths about Ireland history, I am glad at least this present generation coming up will get the opportunity to understand who they are - warts an all.

Well now RKF, Aren't you the real hard man/woman. Hiding behind an anonymous internet user-name and making derogatory
remarks about the Irish team. I will ignore you from now on as you are not worth my time.

Ram I admire and support our rugby team and have argued for them on this site. However not singing Amhran na bhFiann before our games in the World Cup is wrong.

Greengrass - as I understand it "Amhran na bhFiann" is the anthem of the 26 counties, Eire, The Republic of Ireland,
call it what you will. Since the Irish rugby team is not an exclusive representitive of any part of the island, but rather an
inclusive (and successful sporting) representation of the island as a whole, it is not wrong imho.

Any-one who says that the Irish team ( a real and inclusive Irish team) should be ashamed of themselves over what
song or cd is played before a game sickens my ...............well you know what they sicken.

In 1954 11 Players from the Republic refused to take the field in Ravenhill because God save The Queen was been played. They were led by a proud Irishman Jim McCarthy from Limerick. From 1954 until the 90's the only Anthem played for the Rugby team was Amhrain na bFhiann. Maybe not the players fault but are dictated to by the blazers but remember Jim McCarthy.

Ridiculous statement to make. Amhrán na bhFiann is the anthem of ROI, not N.I. Best, Ferris, Court etc. shouldn't have to stand for an anthem that doesn't represent them, they already have to in Dublin. What are you saying RKF, that Ferris should lead the Ulster players in a boycott because Amhran na bhFiann is played? Thankfully he, and Rugby fans, aren't so narrow minded

I get the drift in relation to the part of your anatomy that is affected. Amhran na bhFiann is sung before home matches in conjunction with Irelands Call in order to recognise both traditions. That is as it should be. The same should happen when we play away from home. Both songs should be sung and both traditions should be recognised imho.

Now that Ireland have been knocked out, all the huge quantities of flags and bunting that have covered our thoroughfares and streets will have to be taken down. Oh wait, they were never put up the begin with...

I knew you'd be in with your kick. We'll hold on and compare the viewing figures for this mornings match and our two soccer internationals. Whilst we wre beaten what we saw was a cracking contest. You are right when you say the soccer world cup is superior at the group stages. However once it gets to the knockout stages the rugby wins by a country mile. The competitiveness, intensity, entertainment levels and honesty are way ahead of what you get in soccer. No feigning injury in this competition.

What bunting and flags? thankfully the Northside of Dublin is a Rugby desert, a union free zone and long may it stay that way.

As for the viewing figures, well duh, Andorra-v-Ireland? The rugby equivalent of that would be Ireland-v-any choice of 170 teams. And no one would watch it.
