The hypocrisy and antipathy all weekend from the Southern media towards McGuinness has been nauseating. Last night on RTE's The Week In Politics Sinn Fein were castigated and treated abysmally and the show didn't hide it's bias against them while the usual Sunday print partitionists spewed out their Unionist guff. Tonight's Frontline show is about this and guess who is on.......Michael McDowell, well that sets the agenda already. What is really stomach churning is that politics in the 26 counties has been fought on the Civil War split for nearly a century, a conflict where there were atrocities committed as bad as anything the Provisionals or McGuinness are said to have done. Most of the Taoiseach's and Presidents of the Republic were involved in the war against Britain and the Civil War that followed so this whiter than white stuff we get is just factual nonsense. I believe that partitionism and anti-Northern sentiments within the Southern media and bodypolitik are far more to do with this than McGuinness's alleged IRA connections. If he was good enough for Ian Paisley, the DUP and Northern Unionist media why is he not good enough for the 26? Along with the Orange Order the ones still living in the past are to be mainly found in the South and many of them were NEVER harmed or touched by the Troubles. We should make sure that no representative of the main political parties get the Presidency. They either presided over the corruption or sat in opposition mutely watching it going on. So i say no F.F., F.G., or Labour should get our votes. AND not Norris either. That narrows down the field. Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 19/09/2011 21:34:29 1038375 Link 0 |
Paddy why dont all the Fine Gael and Labour TDs and senators do what you are suggesting. The Sinn Fein members are committed to an ideal and the money one way or the other will go to promote that Ideal. FG s Ideal is now and always has been the same as FFs . Lets look after our rich mates. derryman (Derry) - Posts: 3246 - 19/09/2011 21:34:57 1038376 Link 0 |

Well Paddy you will be pleased to know I am a Taxpaying Citizen . I even have an Irish Passport but due to an historical wrong I am not allowed to vote in my own countrys elections. Now Paddy I hope you are not suggesting that the non taxpaying citizens of Ireland have no business to have an opinion. There would be a lot of unemployed, pensioners and Students who may feel put out about it. Seamus might be very upset. derryman (Derry) - Posts: 3246 - 19/09/2011 22:03:10 1038420 Link 0 |

I laughed at McDowell last night. he claimed he wasn't about attacking anyone standing as president and they should have the right to do so. He then spends every spare moment attacking Martin McGuiness. Despite Sinn Fein's growing support in the country they do not have influence in the media, but I hope that the Irish people will see through this as they did in LOuth when Gerry Adams topped the poll. The media is powerful, just look at opinion polls in support of Norris. People can be brainwashed. Look out for more stage managed talk shows like last night's effort and the late late show. Sure if your friend raped and brutalised a 15 year old boy in Finglas or Malahide you would stand by him. Wouldn't you ? I can't believe that comment from Norris went unchallenged by Turbidy. thistle_harps (UK) - Posts: 879 - 20/09/2011 08:38:21 1038434 Link 0 |

Mc Dowell is a nobody now, his opinion or his views are completely irrelevant, although the media still find a use for him when it comes to bashing the north. Sergeant_Slash (Cavan) - Posts: 2182 - 20/09/2011 09:46:10 1038469 Link 0 |

This is a very important Question from Fintan O'Toole in the Irish times. In my opinion the answer is a resounding no. paddyogall (Mayo) - Posts: 5110 - 20/09/2011 09:57:49 1038479 Link 0 |
