President Marty?

Goodfella no-one is suggesting that McGuinness will actually be stopped from entering Northern Ireland. They were highlighting the fact that he must ask for permission, permission that of course will always be granted to him. Don't be stupid now

Pomeroy, posters such as Paddy were taking great pleasure in the fact that if their doomsday scenario came about and McGuinness was elected, he could potentially be stopped from entering the 6 counties without the government's permission. I was simply pointing out that they should be careful what they wish for as this would actually work to McGuinness' advantage. I think most people grasped this, you on the other hand came onto to the board and attempted to act the condescending smart man. I think you're the one who is being stupid. Now away and get your named changed there again sure.

I'd chill a bit, your losing the head needlessly. I have never voted for Sinn Fein before but I will be voting for Martin McGuinness as I know a lot of the students I teach. Sinn Fein are a party full of young people, they represent a new bright Ireland. And history is relevant, Erskine Childers was refered to as a "terrorist" even as president of Ireland. The main party's all have some blood on their hands. Garret Fitzgeralds father was an executioner who carried out the orders of rather dubious military courts, a killer no less ruthless than Collins, but thats the type of men that build nations. Prisoners in the Irish civil war where treated appaliingly, even women where at least the British had some moral decency but so what? Thats the PAST, we need only know this, it can't hurt anyone. In the scale of right and wrong McGuinness probably has done things he deeply regrets and is privately ashamed off, but that is the past too. So I'll be voting for him full in the knowledge of his "past" and I am certain he will be there or there abouts. But at least the media will have two candidates to savage on sunday morning.

Dear Marty,

When you become president and a united Ireland is finally returned during your term, I would be happy enough with the reunification of 31 counties. You can let Lizzie have Mayo for the 6.

Thank you,

Sean og

I heard them on about that on the radio the other day but I didn't bother highlighting it, tired of arguing with people who just repeat themselves.

Paddy as if you actually give one sh**e about the Hegarty family. What happened was a tragedy of the political conflict which engulfed Ireland. A further tragedy is that the family are being cynically used by the media and people like you as an anti-Sinn Fein tool. Just like the McConvilles were, just like the McCartneys were etc etc. They are dragged out every election and then ignored once the voting has finished, do you really think the Irish Times or the Indo etc will gave any coverage to these familes come November time etc? Not a chance.

As for the story itself, none of us know what happened, there was a very dirty intelligence war fought in the North. A lot of innnocent people were killed or had their names ruined through dirty tricks. In any event I would have expected that if there was evidence of his involvement in this murder then the RUC would have only too gladly arrested McGuinness.......

Everyone who is anti Sinn Fein is a west Brit dont you know. They are of course more Irish then anyone else in ireland because of their ability to convince frightened mothers to get there sons to come home to be assasinated.

Very distasteful tactic from the media to seek out relatives of victims and get them to tell their story. They'll be ignored once the media agenda has been fulfilled, but I would expect nothing better from the Irish media, they are a real hate-filled lot, intent on mudslinging at anyone who professes to be a republican.

Yes proud to be a republican, I bet you were equally as proud when the IRA Kidnapped, tortured, murdered and buried schoolboy Columbia Mc Veigh in your neighbouring Monaghan in the 1970's along with the countless other murders and physical assualts of Children in their patriotic war for Ireland. An organisation of which Martin McGuinness was an admitted member. Some President he would be alright and shame on the media for bring up these issues. Sweep them under the carpet for a candidate which according to Fintan O'Toole could be up in the Hague.

Yes I agree and very selective when it comes to relatives of victims.

By the way if he came clean about his involvement in the IRA post 1974 he would gain a lot of respect from a lot of people. Until then, he is lying day in, day out.

Its about Martin McGuinness wanting to be head of state of the republic of Ireland. It's not about what the British/RUC/Loyalists did, its about a man who was part of an organisation that killed hundreds of innocent people, many of them women and children. The newspaper reports show that Martin McGuinness was a part of this.

jonny1951 nobody is calling the family liars?

Can you answer this question, do you think that it's right for the media to contact the family every time Martin McGuinness runs for anything? Aren't they allowed any privacy?
