Diarmuid Connollys red card overturned

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A definite red card, no arguments about it. Donegal lad should have seen red too for striking Connolly. Connolly was stupid, luckily for him it didn't cost us the match
.

Being a man has nothing to do with it

Fact is that Connolly should have kept the head and walked off. Free kick in front of the posts, 21 yards out and he goes and retaliates. Stupid thing to do. Donegal player should have stood up but there is probably the odd Dublin player who has hit the deck as well over the years.

I don't think the first strike merited a red card but the fact that he threw a second one did. Probably doesn't merit missing the final, but just ask Paul Galvin if the GAA is fair.

He struck the player - with closed hand. It probably looked worse from where the linesman saw it.

Red Card, no question

In my opinion it is technically a red card.

However Diarmuid is unlucky in that he would not have gotten sent off if it wasn't for the blatant dive.

Definite red card Liam, embarressing the way Boyle reacted but every team in the country has done that in the past. Dublin were lucky they didn't get more red cards as the tactic to take Lacey out of the game was shockingly evident.

No not a red card - common sense should have prevailed it was hand bags stuff... will be rescinded no question about it.

Every team in the country has done that? Give me an example of a Dublin player ever doing that!

With the danger of sounding like a bad winner all I'll say is I was disappointed with Donegals off the ball tactics yesterday.

Strike 1 to the face:
Strike 2 to the shoulder:
Strike 3 to the upper body (artistic licence)

3 strikes and you're OUT

It can't be rescinded as the CCCC can't get involved once the referee has dealt with it on the pitch......a shame of course.

The Donegal player went down holding his face like it was spayed with acid.

Maybe he should take up a non contact sport ?

some people are trying to defend the indefensible, the referee was right to send connolly off, although he should have sent off a donegal player aswell. looks like maurice deegan didn't see the incident himself but acted on the advice of his linesman. i would question the linesman more than referee deegan, if the linesman saw connolly strike he must also have seen the donegal player two handed strike connolly in the throat.

you didn't have to be a genius to lip read the linesman, it was clear from the tv pictures that the linesman used the word PUNCHED when describing to the referee what happened.

It had to be a red card, very disappointing that Connolly can't play the final, he's a forward that is capable of a huge performance if he's on his game. He raised his hand though a few times and you just can't do it. Donegal were trying to upset the Dubs and the likes of the Brogans as more experienced players held their cool, the young Connolly took the bate that Donegal were offering all day!

Yea it was a red card. He raised his hands and hit a man in the face. It's a pity he'll miss the final but it's no ones fault but his own.

its interesting to see people say cahill should have been sent off but nobody has mentioned the incident wher ger brennan was struck in the face after the ball even the sunday games highlights last night didnt mention it but yet on there closing credits they showed it in near slow motion as the donegal player done a gauge to the eye that should have been a red where was the linesman when you need him

That was shown al least 3 times! To say he was struck in the face is going a bit over the top and there was no gauge to the eye if there was there was no intent and Brennan did his best to get something out of it

not on the highlights programme it wasnt analysed,he did strike him in the face similiar to what galvin did but to the eye area, not even a tick or yellow card given

if as one poster mentioned the linesman reported him for a punch then can the cccc not investigate it as he was sent off on video eveidence for a push to the shoulder not a punch so in technical terms he was sent off for the wrong offence

Connolly was stupid , he should not have gotten involved in the first place. he struck the donegal player three times , Where he was struck and what kind of a strike it was in insignifficant. It was a red card end of story. Sad to see him out of the final , but unfortunatly its down to his own stupidity , You felt when O'Gara came on yesterday , he was playing for his final spot.

Very harsh, while he did make contact it was more of a push rather than a punch, it would hardly kill a wasp, ive seen a lot worse without a yellow card even being flashed, fair play dictates that it be recinded.

Ah by the letter of the law it was a sending off as he raised hands blah blah.

But the 5 second delay fall by the Donegal player was laughable, do these lads who go down like women have no shame?

On Laochra Gael the other week, the Meath/Cork one, a clip of 1990 when O Neill of Cork gave Mick Lyons a box in the mouth.
Mick Lyons just rubbed his chin & walked away with no fuss, He certainly didnt get the man sent off.

What is happening to these young fellas?

If Connolly gets off it'll make a mockery of the GAA's appeals system. Not condoning what the Donegal player did, but Connolly struck him, doesn't matter if it was with an open hand or closed fist. Look at Brian Farrell's red card earlier in the year which was upheld even on appeal and to me Connolly's 'strike' was infinitely worse than that incident.. It's unfortunate for the guy but he really only has himself to blame for missing the final.

Hopefully justice will prevail and Connolly gets to play in the final. That incident was a new low for Donegal in a year where they have embarrassed themselves and their sport
