There was not nearly as much crime back then, this sort of attack by people on their own communities would have been unthinkable. Since then, the welfare state has grown immeasurably, and yet we hear this 'It's all social exclusion, poverty, inequality, etc'. Why do you think so many young men in Tottenham are violent and lawless?

The above are unsubstantiated generalisations. He has written a book detailing riots in London going back two thousand years. He outlined in particular riots by apprentices. He said they were regular occurences . He outlined those which occured in 1780. 120 people were killed during these particular riots. He said what occured last week was nothing new.

Read it and found it to be a well written and researched article. The phrase "historically illiterate judgement" was made for Seamus.

The man I was refering to previously is called Clive Bloom. His book argues essentially the same point and is titled Violent London 2000 Years of Riots, Rebels and Revolts.

Who else sang this? When I listened I was recalling another version by somebody else.

Sad to see the new low our once great neighbour has sunk to. Makes me glad, despite our current difficulties, that I'm from the Republic.

MP's claiming non-existent expenses, starting wars for big business, phone tapping, paying off cops, politicians cosying up to the Murdochs. In a fountain of corruption and greed, it's inevitable it will make it's way down the social classes.

If its a fountain of corruption and greed that caused this in the UK then we better prepare for the mommy and daddy of all riots in Ireland.
