Is the Kerry forward line the Greatest Ever?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In all fairness the 70's kerry forwards were the best ever cause they were fitter and way ahead of their time in their preperation, fitness and profesionalism than any other county. i know critics will say the compitition wasn't good and kerry had an easy passage to the final but they had a hunger and will to win better than other counties.as for donnaghy i think hes playing better now than any time since '07 as he had some injury problems since simi final of '08 but its nothing to do wheather galvin is playing or not.

Are they the greatest? who knows probably not, but the best forward line probably comes from the Kerry team of the 70's & 80's
The Kerry team of the 2000's has given the county great says and more good days than bad. How much would Dublin - Meath - Galway - Cork etc posters on this site give to have some of the days Kerry have had over the last 10 years? People should consider that before they nit picking at certain Kerry players.

It's not far off... but this sort of comparison is bloody difficult.

You cant judge the past and present - Different game altogether - give a few of the past players the fitness of today's lads... and you'd see something special but hey perhaps not...

But as a Kerry man you know only too well of the legends that you could include... most of which would hail from your rather splendid part of the world.

Either way... it's still one hell of a forward line that is better than anything left in the 2011 Championship - so I'm not surprised to see you in a confident mood. :)

understand where you are coming from, think the best way to compare is by seeing how good these forward lines were in comparison to the other forward lines of their time, think this forward line will stand up to most!! always got to look at the kerry team of the 70' and 80's because what they achieved but this forward line pushes them close!! unfortunately, these days in gaa everyone sems to prefer to criticise, very rarely credit is given to any team without them taking a large amount of negativity as well ie. tyrone and cork.

Sheva I'm not doubting donaghys ability the guys a class act . What I'm saying is teams are putting there biggest man on him cutting the aerial threat that he has . Paul Galvin seems to able to make pin point crosses / passes to him at a height he can continue to run at defenses . Galvin brings the best out of donaghy is all I'm saying

Tyrone forward line in 05 was the greatest.
Canavan, mulligan, dooher, brian mcguigan and stephen o'neill ... simply unmarkable

Spillane !!!
Sheehy !!!
Egan !!!
Power !!!
Moran !!!
Liston !!!

No way this lot are that good.

Gooch could make it. But ahead of either Mikey Sheehy or John Egan? Would be a tough call.
Declan O'Sullivan probably would start on the wing or centre ahead of either Power or Moran.

But that's about it.

An interesting titbit is that this Kerry team won 8 All Ireland's all of which Moran started at 11. Whenever he started on the wing they lost.

Declan O Sullivan, Gooch and Galvin as good as in any era. AND I rate Donaghy a far better full-forward (and a far better footballer) than Bomber Liston. Remember there's no throwing the ball into the net these days! So, to pick 6 from the current crop and the 70-80's guys here are my 6

Gooch, Declan O Sullivan, Paul Galvin (bye bye Spillane)
Egan Dongahy Mikey Sheehy

So 4 present day guys and 2 from O'Dwyer's era!

I think Down in the 1960's was still the best football team and the best 6 forwards ever. Total football!

1004217 No simple as .
Kerry in 86 Power , Liston , Spillane , Ogie Moran and Sheehy
Tyrone in 05 Canavan , SON , Mulligan , McGuigan , Dooher
Down in 1991 Linden , James McCarten , Ross Carr and Blaney
I've heard the Galway team of 1966 had a fantastic team but im too young to have seem them play . Although it's the same forwards ( except for Darren OSullivan ) the Kerry foward line 06 - 08 was fitter , faster and could hit endless shots .

HAVE TO AGREE THE 'O5 that forward line definitely impressive and a force to be reckoned with back then....

am i the only person who remembers that in 05 mulligan was very poor up untill he scored that goal again dublin. If im not mistaken he was taken off very soon after scoring that goal as well because he had done nothing else in that game. Yes he was very good in the replay semi and the final but would i don't think you can count a month of football as a reason to state he was lethal.
