Is the Kerry forward line the Greatest Ever?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With the likes of Gooch and Declan O'Sullivan, arguably the two best players in the country, along with Darren O'Sullivan, Paul Galvin and Donaghy, is this the best ever forward line in the history of the GAA??

No. The 1975-1986 Kerry team had the greatest set of forwards - Sheehy, Bomber, Egan, Liston, Spillane etc. They would all walk on the present Kerry team, you can only say the same about Cooper and Declan O' Sullivan at present.

Can only agree with you, in terms of sheer talent this forward line is the best in years. im afraid i can see them tearing mayo apart although i hope im wrong. the 2 o sullivans are the most under rated players in ireland (yet there still rated very high) Quality forward line

Your right - Mayo haven't a hope in 3 weeks time. To much power for our lads. Definitely the best forward line ever.

No simple as .
Kerry in 86 Power , Liston , Spillane , Ogie Moran and Sheehy
Tyrone in 05 Canavan , SON , Mulligan , McGuigan , Dooher
Down in 1991 Linden , James McCarten , Ross Carr and Blaney
I've heard the Galway team of 1966 had a fantastic team but im too young to have seem them play . Although it's the same forwards ( except for Darren OSullivan ) the Kerry foward line 06 - 08 was fitter , faster and could hit endless shots .

No, see Cute_Kerry_Hoors reply, Donaghy isn't fit to lace any of the players he mentioned boots. The only modern day Kerry forward that will be regarded as an all time great is the Gooch, Galvin could've been too but for the suspensions and some injury problems don't think we ever saw how good he is consistantly enough.

think it must be taken into account how this forward line works as a unit!! the way the gooch feeds off donaghy, the pace and ball carrying ability of the o'sullivans and the work rate and ball winning of galvin and walsh!! when the kerry forward line is playing to its full potential its unbelievable to watch, even from watchng the games from the 70's and 80's doesnt compare to this forward line now witht there pace and movement!!

Certainly not the best forward line ever, in fact Kerry have had better forward lines. The Gooch is not even firing on all cylinders

think it is kind of harsh to dismiss them so easily. everyone is talking about how the kerry team struggle from 1-9, surely if they go on and win the all ireland this forward line deserves proper recognition!! also they look like they have plenty of more to offer this season, you can be sure that donaghy and gooch will put in big displays from here on in!! personally, i have never seen such a great performance from a forward line as kerrys in 09 against the dubs and they have improved since then!!

as_ky, there's no doubt that the present Kerry forward unit is great to watch when it's in full motion. However, no matter how much I like both Galvin and Donnchadh Walsh as players, they would both be blown out of it by Pat Spillane...fact. The man was a footballing machine and the only other player from the modern era that even comes close is Brian Dooher.

Also, the great Kerry team always worked as a unit.

i think people have created some sort of mythical vision of what football used to be like in the past. All i am hearing these days is negativity about every county team, with regards there players and how they play. cant remember the last time there has been an all ireland champion that havent received some serious flack from the media. I dont buy into the whole 'its part of being champions' thing either, kerry, cork and tyrone are three great teams and deserve alot more credit!!

There are only two great players in Kerry's present line up as far as I am concerned: Declan O'Sullivan and The Gooch. I think Glavin is good as is Darren O'Sullivan (he has mostly been considered a weak link ,even in Kerry) and Donaghy is effective at knocking the ball down , but couldnt be considered a great player. Donacha Walsh is extremely ordinary.

Galvin to be fair was player of the year in 2009 and was kerrys best player last year again, maybe the fact he has been out injured so long has made u forget how good he actually is!! Donaghy 'knocking the ball down' as you put it really plays down an unbelivable skill that unhinges any defence and that nobody in the country can do as good as!! as for darren o' sullivan, he is getting better every year and after the league i said he would be worth a small wager for player of the year, his point taking has improved hugely over the past 12 months!!
