I find it scary that I agree with the lad from Mayo, Maths is a perfect example of an Irish joke. Let me see! the failure rates in Music and Art are virtually nil, we are told this is because the students are "motivated" so i presume the opposite is true then of ordinary level maths with its archaic throwback to the Edwardian era. How come so many students who fail maths do so well in geography, history etc? its bacsue the subject is made interesting by interested students and teachers. But maths? As a subject poor teachers persist in trying to teach the ordinary level maths curriculum which is total and utter useless tripe, they know it the pupils know. It is just so indicative of this "worls class education system".
For instance how many primary schools say on the Aran islands? how many secondary schools? how many pupils? how many principals? how many Vice principals when you actually look it up and find out you will be shocked at the cost of operating this "system". Its not fair to single out just the Aran Islands. In D9 in Dublin how many primary schools? there are 28 in all (ok some are specialist schools) but some schools have 500 and maybe around the corner is a quaint faith school with maybe 38 or an Irish speaking school. The whole system is screwed up from top to bottom.
In secondary the joke that is transition year is still allowed to persist, with 1 in 10 failing ordinary level maths maybe it might be better revising the curriculum and spreading out over three years rather than two.
We can't afford this anymore, its not producing the students we need, nor given them what they want, this system is built around the teachers and administration not the pupils.

Ball (hyphen) Boy, you should try living with a teacher lad! Its like a minefield tripping over books on maths magic, bonn go barr, Alive-O, etc!!

Its nearly back to school time, so next week the house will be a frenzy of activity with blu-tac, gold stars, blunt sissors and oul bits of chalk flyin everywhere!!
........but at least when shes home by 3pm with the big pay cheque, she manages to get the shirts washed and ironed for me!!

Regards,
