Best GAA intercounty match ever

I may have a look at this Down v Derry game from 1994.
By most accounts it sounds like the greatest game of football ever played.
I probably did see the highlights of this at the time on the Sunday Game but I cant remember it.

The first half of Kildare V Donegal was as bad as I have ever seen. The rest of the game was exciting but the standard was still not up to much.Tyrone V Kerry in 2005 was the last great game I have seen, couldn't begin to pick the best ever.

In football the 2005 All-Ireland final Tyrone 1-16 Kerry 2-10.

In hurling, after huge consideration I cannot pick one from the following

2010 Tipp 4-17 Kilkenny 1-18 AIF
2009 Kilkenny 2-22 Tipp 0-23 AIF
2004 Waterford 3-16 Cork 1-21 MF
2002 Kilkenny 1-20 Tipp 1-16 AISF
1990 Cork 5-15 Galway 2-21 AIF

hurling, so much to choose from, it's like how Hugh Hefner feels before he goes to be each night.

I have thought long and hard about this, there are many great games, but few a truely memorable after a few years, decades, that's what makes the 1994 ulster first round meeting of Down and derry the greatest ever,

it was believed that whoever who the match would win the All-ireland - a big statement - in essence the All-ireland final in ealy June. Derry were the holders of Sam with great defenders like tony scullion and mckeever, down had a great attack in mc cartan, blaney and the brill. mickey linden. This game ebbed and flowed. The capacity crowd (all-ticket) watched as Derry took the lead and looked like winning until super sub ciaran mccabe scored a fantastic goal by lobbing the keeper in the last minute to win the match,

afterwards michael m. of rte said it was the greatest ever and eclipised the kerry dublin game of 1977. For the record Down esily won Ulster, beat cork by 5points, Dublin in the final - but the day in Celtic Park will live with me forever as the greatest
1. Great players on both sides
2. wonderful scores
3. last minute goal to win it
4.current and incomming all-ireland champions
5 the atmosphere was electric - no prawn sandwich brigade here
6 weather was fantastic
7 - it was the 'real- all Ireland' -
8 there was no back door - loser got nothing

The Munster hurling final replay 1991 Tipperary 4-19 Cork 4-15. Never get sick of looking at it. Dublin v kerry 1977 semi-final same type of game, even the crowd ran onto the field in both games.

The Donegal Kildare game was poor throughout I thought, exciting finish but 80 percent of it was average. I don't want to sound biased but the best game I ever saw was Monaghan v Meath in 2005 NFL 2 final, it finished 3-13 to 3-12. It was a belter from start to finish.

We all are prob biased towards our own county games. I think the 2009 game between Kilkenny and Tipp was better game to watch with tipp been very unlucky. Of course I'll say Waterford/Cork Munster final 2004. I rem Wexford played Offaly in Leinster Final in 1996. The most skillfull game I've ever seen with flicks, blocks and hooks. Limerick v Clare the same year was mighty tussle with Carey wonder point. In Football Galway v Kildare in 98. Best long range points scored by Galway. And the The Kerry/Dublin game in Thurles sticks out. And who'll ever forget the Battle Waterford had with london this year ha ha

Im going to be biased here but beating Kilkenny in the Leinster semi-final 2004 was unreal. Pity it hasn't happened too often.

Best game I was ever at was 2005 All-Ireland Semi - Final which was effectively the decider for the rivalry between the counties of the previous 5 years. The '03 final between the teams was almost paralysed by tension but in this great game, after both got caught out in '04,.this was IT and everyone knew it. There had also been the Ulster Final and replayed final between the teams that year which were tempestuous dramatic affairs. All roads led here.

You could sense it in atmosphere and build up and crowd of 60,000 + which was huge. I rem I was in Upper Hogan and a small group of Aussie guys were watching and seeing them get caught up in the sheer drama and magic of the occasion was in believable. As a match it was the absolute definition of intensity, hard football but attacking and players just out on their feet, fingertips getting to the ball to keep possession or keep it moving in right direction.

And the dramatic finale, McGeeney urging his comrades on from the line. The free kick from out on the left - scoreable but very tricky, the little piece of theatre between Mulligan and Canavan and of foyer the kick itself, beautifully judged and curled right over the black spot.

Problem with doing these on a smartphone is that it's easy to hit 'add message' before spell check etc so that happened. - sorry !

Best games my own county were in that spring to mind were : All-Ireland SF v Kerry 1985 when a great Monaghan team drew with and so nearly caused a massive upset against the second coming of the greatest team that ever played, and in an era when Ulster and Connacht teams went up for routine hammerings from Kerry. 2007 All-Ireland QF v Kerry when only the O'Se's brilliance at the end saved Kerry in a thriller in front of 80,000 + people there for double bill. 1992 Ulster SFC v Derry in Castleblayney. Losing 0-10 to 0-1 at half time, a home humiliating on the cards. Got it back to 8 with Derry still cruising when 3 incredible rapid fire goals from Stephen McGinnity and Ray McCarron turned the match upside down ! Derry rallied to get a goal back of their own but a Gerry Moen point got the draw for Derry. This was knockout, no back door and this Derry team went on to win the All-Ireland the following year. One of those matches when you had to pinch yourself afterward !

And finally, other great matches that spring to mind - '05 best All-Ireland as the first and third best teams in the country battled it out for supremacy. '92 another v enjoyable final. To be there for Dub v Tyrone when Mulligan scored 'that' goal and the replay was a treat. The noise that the Dublin fans made when they were mounting what turned out to be a failed comeback was unreal. The roof nearly came off Croker as each point went over. Derry v Down '94 must be in there too, was lucky to be at that one. Ulster Final '93 Derry v Donegal was a cracker considering the swimming pool like conditions caused by a torrential downpour. That Donegal team would not have been beaten on any other day.
