Best GAA intercounty match ever

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Ah stop 06 against Mayo has to be the worst day I've ever experience in croke park it still hurts today. How did we lose that match we were the way better team , just our luck for the first time ever q Mayo team came to croke park and couldnt miss. Best game ever was 77 semi final it had everything played by the two greatest ever football teams.

For me the best game i have ever seen for skill level and intensity is the Leinster hurling final of 1996 between Wexford and Offaly. The whole game is on you tube and was shown recently on All Ireland Gold on TG4, look it up it was a brilliant game.

You can purchase the dvd. I will dig mine out tonight and post the details tomorrow. very well worth it.
Wrong result for Derry but genuinely the best game I have ever been at or seen by a distance. I think the do or die certainly helped as there was no bak door and these two had built up a real rivalry as it was the 4th year in a row they had met with 3 All Irelands to show for it.

Kerry v Dublin semi 77
Kerry v Dublin qtr final 2001 - Maurise Fitz last min point
Tyrone v Kerry final 2008
Galway v Kerry qtr final 2008?
Kerry v Armagh qtr final 2006?

Am obviously biased so all matches feature Kerry. Apologies

These are a few in my memory

Galway vs Kilkenny All Ireland semi final 2001 - will never forget kevin brodericks wonder point.
Galway vs Derry All Ireland semi final 2001 - a great game of football where galway eventually won by 3 points but derry led by 3 points in the last ten minutes. Very attractive and free flowing game.
Dublin vs Armagh - 2002
Kilkenny vs Wexford 2004
Galway vs Kilkenny All Ireland semi final 2005 - the score of 5-18 to 4-18 says it all.
Tyrone vs Kerry 2005
Waterford vs Cork - munster final where paul flynn scored the bullet of a free.
Dublin vs Mayo 2006
Galway vs Kerry 2008 - played in horrendous conditions yet finished 1-21 to 1-16
Tipperary vs Limerick 08? Where they met three times after two replays
Tipperary vs Kilkenny 2009/2010
Cork vs Tyrone - 2009
I also thought the Derry vs Armagh match this year was very good as well as the quarter finals last weekend.

For atmosphere and excitement the Armagh Kerry final in 2002 was one of the best matches I was ever at.

Without a doubt, the best football match I've ever seen was the 2005 all-Ireland final: Tyrone 1-16 Kerry 2-10. The standard of play was exceptional and it was played at a blistering pace with fierce intensity for the full 70 minutes.
In hurling there are so many classics to choose from that it is impossible to pick just one. Some epic games that come to mind are:
1984 Munster final: Cork 4-15 Tipp 3-14, 1987 All -Ireland semi-final: Galway 3-20 Tipp 2-17, 1996 Leinster final - Wexford 2-23 Offaly 2-15 (very close until the last few minutes), 1997 All-ireland final Clare 0-20 Tipp 2-13, 2005 all-Ireland semi-final: Galway 5-18 Kilkenny 4-18 and a number of Cork-Waterford clashes over the last decade.

The best game by far was the 1994 Ulster Championship match Doire v An Dun. Reigning All-Ireland champions played Down in Celtic Park, glorious day, great players in both teams. Great physical game of football and the only downside was the result for me. This game would be closely followed by some of the Dublin v Meath encounters in Croke Park.

But Derry v Down must be by far the best in the football championship.

1984 Munster Hurling Final. The Cork and Waterford classic in 2004 was probably a better hurling game but it didn't have the level of tension because of the presence of the back-door. You can't beat a great knock-out hurling game and the atmosphere in Thurles in 1984 was beyond anything I have seen before or since in a GAA stadium.

Tipp played like men possessed that day looking to break a 13-year famine in Munster and the chance to play in a Centenary All-Ireland Final in Thurles. Near the end they held a four point lead with 5 minutes to go only for Cork to blitz them with a late scoring burst to score two goals and two points and win by four. As we know now Cork went on to win the All-Ireland to cap a memorable recovery from losing the previous two All-Ireland Finals.

Has to be Dublin V Mayo in 06, it had everything, Tyrone v Armagh all ireland semi final in 05 was pretty darn good as well. And people suggesting the Kildare v Donegal match? The first half of that game was the worst I had seen in a long time.

While I wouldn't for one minute say it's the best game ever, the excitement at the end of our match with Kildare the last day would be hard beat.
Just listen to the commentary on Radio Ulster:
