With such an exciting finish to the Donegal v Kildare game it just got me thinking what was the best match in the history of the GAA?

Depends how you define "best". If you mean quality wise then certainly not. For excitement and tension and desire and commitment it was right up there

Exciting perhaps, but the standard of football was quite low, the strategy of both teams was to stop the other team playing and the supporters of teams will admit that. It was a good nail biting contest but don't kid yourself into thinking it was anything other than that.

No matter what game you can pull out of your hat the best game was by far the DOWN v DERRY Ulster Championship game 1994. Derry where All Ireland Champions going into the match. Look it up on You Tube if you want to know what I am talking about.

From my own experience in terms of both quality and excitement tyrone dublin drawn game in 2005 was great as was 2005 final. Mayo dublin in 2006 was also a great match i think. Perhaps also armagh dublin in 2002 semi

The Derry v Down classic in Celtic Park Derry 1994 has been rightly acknowledged as one of the greatest games of football ever played. Two great teams going hell for leather with no back door. The game had everything with some of the best defenders, midfielders and forwards of the modern game.

And if only there had been a back door----------------

Very hard to say which the greatest inter county match was - everyone tells me Dublin v Kerry in 1977, but I wasn't around back then so it's hard to judge. But I'll mention three games I thought were tense, exciting, and high on quality.

1. Dublin v Tyrone - drawn game in 2005 - Whelo's first half display, the roof coming off the place when Mossy Quinn scored his goal before half time, Magic Mulligan's goal (best goal I've ever seen at Croke Park), Tyrone's comeback, and Mossy's free at the end to tie it up. Couldn't have asked for better.

2. Armagh v Tyrone - All Ireland semi final in 2005 - you couldve cut the atmosphere with a knife that day, tense all the way, and you had no idea who'd win the match up until Peter Canavan stuck that free over right at the end.

3. Kildare v Meath - Leinster semi-final replay in 1997 - high scoring game, best remembered for Jody Devine's one man show in extra time. Pure quality football from Leinster's top two teams at that time.

Usually when one of these polls are conducted, Down v Derry in 1994 is mentioned - again I'd love to comment, but I've never seen that match. Gonna have to check it out. No doubt they were Ireland's best two teams at that time, with quality players in every position.

for me it as to be,the 1997 leinster semi final 1st Replay, between Meath and Kildare, the game had everything
2 penalties one scored and one missed,5 goals a sending off,the ref having to be replaced due to cramp.
Meath being 6 points down in normal time and coming back to force extra time.then being 6 points down
at half time in extra time before scoring 7 points on the trot in the 2nd period to lead by a point before kildare equalised with a sideline
kick to bring the game to another replay. Some of the best players of the decade playing too,Niall Buckley,
Glenn Ryan,Anthony Rainbow and Dermot Early with Kildare, and Trevor Giles,John McDermott,Darren Fay and
Graham Geraghtywith Meath. hard to argue against it,i think the final score was 3-17 to 2-20

In hurling over the last decade we've seen some amazing games:

Waterford v Cork - Munster Final 2004 (Cork and Waterford had some titanic battles during the decade but I picked the best of the bunch imo)
Galway v Kilkenny - All-Ireland semi-final 2005
Wexford v Kilkenny - Leinster semi-final 2004
Cork v Wexford - All-Ireland semi-final 2003 (drawn game)
Kilkenny v Tipperary - All-Ireland final 2009

In my own opinion it has to be the day tom brewster put the ball over the bar to put all ireland favourites armagh out of the championship at the quarter final stage. It was the best feeling ive ever had watching a game of football.
Other than that i would say that the armagh dublin semi final of 2002 was a cracker as was the dublin mayo game in 2006.

He was obviously not insinuating that the Kildare/Donegal game was the best game, he meant that because there was an exciting finish, it got him thinking about which game actually was the best
