Kilkenny coming along nicely but Waterford have nothing to lose

Culchie,

"Keeper, You're kind of onto something I think. It's not very easy to bat the ball down to a waiting man. Very few hurlers would be able to perfect that art. Doubling on it ain't easy either. However, I reckon that if some inter-county side learns to use the hurley effectively in the air, to move the ball on without catching, to bat the ball out with some degree of accuracy, they could be the next big thing."

You might be onto somethere yourself but it should be a lot easier for a defender to bat a ball in the general direction of a free man 10 yards in front of you than it is to try to catch it over the forward.

culchie,

I stringly agree, the game is crying out for a team that can move the ball quickly to the inside forwards, like Offaly in the 90s and like Cork used to play.

Waterford need to crowd midfield and stop KK's half back line getting on top here. That is the only way to beat KK I think. Either that or try to do like Tipp did last year - if Noel Hickey starts, try to isolate him by playing a target man on him.

I would love to see na Déise do it but I'd be very surprised if they did it .

I do think that Waterford will put it up to the Cats alright but I think Kilkenny are determined to get another crack at Tipperary.

Waterford were brilliant against Galway but Kilkenny will be a massive step us, as the Dubs found out in the Leinster Final.

deiseblaa:

Did you not see davy's interview after the game he basically said he didn't play any sort of tactics in particular and just let the lads go out and play.... the fact that they probably won every battle on the field would should they won easily but galway didn't put up much of a fight, can't see the kats rooling over and getting their bellies tickled.... them kats have claws.

Barnowl94:
That's what tipp have been doing in the last few years get the ball in quick and then run into space.... kinda how they won the all-ireland last year and also how they scored 7 goals against waterford if you have pace in your forward line you need to get it in quick while players are in space. Also the distingsion between aimless ball in the forwards and good ball has to be made. It needs to be low ball or ball into space. You lob high ball into the kilkenny half back line you'll get no change like what happened dublin. The odd time the played it in low they caused a bit of trouble I'm not fully convinced by the kilkenny full back line this year isolate then and I think one or two of them are there for the taking. Noel Hickey was at corner back in the dublin game he's a good full back but he is by no means a corner back dosen't have the pace couldn't understand how dublin didn't take advantage of that. They seemed to just want to pump balls into their half forward line and see if they'd win the physical battle which they didn't they were playing a different kilkenny to that they played in the league final.

I'd agree with HAG. Fast low ball into space is Tipp's game plan. And interestingly enough KK are spending alot of training doing theis very exercise.

I disagree on Noel Hickey, however. He still is mighty.

And deiseblaa - Davy let the lads play against galway. no tactics. just hurl. And that match was won because Galway lost every battle on the pitch. I'm still in shock.

At present I think nobody moves the ball faster than Tipp.

Tipp & Kilkenny are better than the rest for three reasons:

(1) First touch
(2) Work rate
(3) Goal scoring

You can have all the tactics in the world, but if you give the ball to a forward who hasn't got a first touch, that second lost in dropping it & trying to pick it up gives the backs the time needed to win it back. Consistently, Kilkenny & Tipp by either running with it, or driving it into space give it to a forward with a first touch and who can get goals. The work rate in both sides means nobody sits back & admires the score they just got, they worry about the next one.

Good luck the the Déise but whoever comes out of it I still Tipp will win the All Ireland. Tipp were brilliant in last years final but they seemed to have got even better. Let the games begin...

As a full back yes as a corner back no.... was at the kilkenny dublin game and he just didn't look comfortable in the corner and was there for the taking any time dublin got low ball into the corner, when he went to full back it was a different story.

You had lads saying after waterford beat galway what a shock it was well in fairness it wasn't really even though galway were favourites waterford still had a massive chance in beating them. But sorry this time around it will be a massive shock if they beat the kats I wish them all the best I'll be shout for em.

Well keeper if you want to put down seventy to win a tenner go ahead. I confidently expect KK to win but wouldn't back any team at those odds. Now if it was liathroidboy he'd probably be putting down 7,000 to win a 1,000 and if you were in his league it might be worth a punt but if you are a mere mortal like the rest of us, keep your money in your pocket and just tune in and enjoy the game.

I see on today's independent that jj delaney was unfortunately let off his job, hopefully he doesn't take out his frustration on waterford. Fantastic hurler, always rated him much superior to shefflin and walsh. Hopefully waterford give it their best shot and that they don't throw in the towel in the first ten minutes.

Not being a betting man I put the odds the wrong way around. Think I'll stick a tenner on the Deise!

waterford six points behind going in at half time , competing well but some very stupid play most notably from eoin kelly , declan prendergast and brick walsh who has been all over the place in the first half , his horrible ball was the reason why hogan got the second goal , absolutely horrid play , against kk you cant make any stupid mistakes thats exactly what he did and waterford were rightly made regret it
