I am not surprised. Respect for anything Irish/Nationalist/Republican in the 26 has gone out the window. The country has become very Anglophiled and Unionist as the people become ashamed of their heritage including the GAA. Just as well that the true, original Irish province of Ulster still flies the flag proudly and respects the anthem. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9823 - 11/07/2011 21:24:11 981572 Link 0 |
This thread really sets a new standard for the mayo posters on this site. Do you really think a player can hear music from a brass band in the middle of the croke park cauldron? So what if he warms up when the crowd starts to roar at the end of the anthem? I suppose the mayo players next week will stand to attention, give a salute at the end and then bless themselves before the game? My father is from mayo but come on the rossies next weekend purely because of the likes of this poster, liathroid boy, 51long ago etc etc etc. Painful stuff. I totally agree with the author and the majority who have supported this post. This has become a disgraceful tradition in Croke Park and something must be done about it. Is there something wrong with the national anthem itself or with the people of this country who sing it ? The GAA cannot stand idly by and it makes one wonder what does the GAA stand for any more. Linking this to the absurd non-televising of the Cork-Galway hurling game yesterday makes one wonder where are we going as one of the greatest sporting organizations in the world. nevergivein (Roscommon) - Posts: 115 - 11/07/2011 21:52:36 981628 Link 0 |
No wonder the Anthem is not respected, its a dire tune anyway.I would prefer if a song from each of the competing counties was played/sung rather than having the Anthem treated the way it is.Ban it as hipster says. Barnowl94 (Galway) - Posts: 3150 - 11/07/2011 21:59:14 981654 Link 0 |
You have to make allowances, prior to the start of a fight have any of you ever seen an Irish boxer standing to attention during the playing of the national anthem, I haven't and I'm sure that applies to the rest of you as well. Gammy_Knee (USA) - Posts: 1482 - 11/07/2011 22:00:26 981658 Link 0 |
Respect for the Irish anthem only shown at a Rugby game! Ha this is an absolute joke right? When the Irish Rugby team play abroad (thats England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) they DON'T even play the Irish National Anthem instead we get that Oul 'Orish Cabaret Tune the embarressing Green Honky Tonk "Ireland's Call" so how's that for respect!! arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4955 - 12/07/2011 08:49:01 981669 Link 0 |
Ulsterman you obviously define being Irish as being anti-English. Did you ever think there might be a way of being Irish that doesn't involve them at all? doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 12/07/2011 09:27:05 981697 Link 0 |
Dire lyrics too Barnowl. If you really must have an anthem, change to something more positive. Australia fair would be decent one to take a lead from. Flags emblems and religion have an awful lot to answer for thoughout the ages though, and not just confined to Ireland either. glenhead (UK) - Posts: 117 - 12/07/2011 09:57:55 981712 Link 0 |
Respect for our National Anthem- what posters should realise is that when you say 'our' national anthem for alot of posters on here that means GSTQ and to my knowledge that always gets great respect. on the soldiers song the sooner it is got rid of the better its a shameful song from a shameful past and to say it is embarassing is an understatement liathroidboy (Mayo) - Posts: 4921 - 12/07/2011 11:01:49 981780 Link 0 |
Personally I'd love to change our national anthem and our rag of a flag, I'd far rather something that would represent all 32 counties. Our current anthem and flag don't do this although there are plenty of deluded fools who'll argue that they do which is very disrespectful to many of our northern brothers and sisters. For shame! Great to see the counter view beginning to emerge. Maybe tolerence is what's lacking here? Culchie (Cork) - Posts: 799 - 12/07/2011 11:30:45 981831 Link 0 |
htaem, at the moment perhaps an amalgam of the EU/IMF flags would be substituted along with a new anthem of 'Buddy can you spare a dime.' hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 12/07/2011 11:32:44 981835 Link 0 |

comes as no surprise really, when i go to a game very few people in the crowd sing it and likewise i cant recall too many players who do actually belt it out with pride which i think is a disgrace! goes to show how few people in this country dont know their own anthem kildare4sam2010 (Kildare) - Posts: 506 - 12/07/2011 12:11:27 981912 Link 0 |
