Respect for our National Anthem

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I couldn't help noticing yesterday that before Amhrán na bhFiann had concluded, Bernard Brogan jumped off to take up his position whilst the rest of the Dublin troop followed. The Wexford footballers showed much more respect and stayed, singing the anthem until it had concluded, with some admirably blessing themselves before the game had begun. It is shameful that some players have no respect for our Anthem and in doing so, show no respect for our country. The Dublin players showed no respect yesterday. I haven't noticed this practice before, but I'm sure Dublin aren't the only disrespectful team in this country.

Yet, players aside, supporters show little respect as well. The majority cheer before Amhrán na bhFiann has concluded and have taken their seats before the end of the anthem. Nobody could ever defend that.

What I'm calling for now is respect for our National Anthem from both players and supporters. It is terribly disrespectful and poor form not to give the RESPECT the anthem deserves.

I agree with the first man there. Sing it right to the end and then cheer!

The anthem should be respected and it annoys me too however I think most teams/fans do this nowadays and not just the dubs. I think it is a matter that needs attention by the GAA and perhaps county boards should be fined if teams/fans do not respect our national anthem.

seriously do some people have nothing else to do you must realy live a boring life in mayo if you scrutinise every single aspect of a match day that much
for what its worth regarding players supporters that has been happening for years it only adds to the atmosphere when crowds get revved up before the end of the anthem.you should try and enjoy the matches and not worry about little things

One of things I hate the most in this world patriotism and national anthems promote patriotism, this is why I have never and will never sing our anthem or stand up like a wally with both hands behind the back and all that bladder!

You're born where you're born because two people just happened to get randy in a certain country, so why be proud of it? Nothing to be ashamed of, of course but why proud?

No, Dublin have really no bearing in the game itself the last number of years, it's all about the supporters, the media hype and the absolute rubbish that people go on about talking them up as a major force.

What a load of rubbish. I've been going to games since I was three and this has always happened. Nothin new and certainly not something that is done by only a few counties, this happens everywhere up and down the country, always has, always will. Its tradition if nothing else.

As for the blessing yourself thing.. I think you're living in the dark ages here. Its a modern game in a modern country where religion has lost ground and most now see it for what it is. If your expecting players to bless themselves before the game starts you'll have a long wait.

I for one would rather see players revved up, raring to go and unable control. We're all looking for passion out there so why try and ruin it.

Well said Miteymeath. Obviously not much going on in Mayho these days. That's exactly what happened, Bernard broke ranks to walk and warm up further. We have to understand that these guys should be mentally concentrating on nothing but the game at this point so hardly a cardinal sin, particularly with the roar of 48,000 fans in his ears to move during the final line of the song.

Up the Dubs!

I think the anthem thing is a personal thing as is the blessing yourself. I also don't think everybody hates the dubs, I would actually like to see Dublin win for the players, not for the supporters though. I was at the game yesterday and I was disgusted at the booing when Ben Brosnan was taking frees, absolutely disgraceful behaviour. That's where the respect is lacking!

Respect for our Anthem is important. Look at Rugby and the respect they give it in Cardiff,London,Edinburgh and various other oversea venues. A credit to their country.GAA please note.

These are Amateur sports men playing in front of 40'000 supporters nerves do kick in and moving about during a National Anthem has nothing to do with respecting it more to do with coping with you nerves before the biggest game of your career, just as fans always seem to let rip on the last few bars Amhrán na bhFiann.
