You can only beat what's in front of you yankee and yes Galway will have to improve for the Cork game without a doubt but we'll take that win for a start. I hope you'll be supporting your fellow western neighbours Galway now that your county is out of it. tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 05/07/2011 10:25:35 975061 Link 0 |
By the way how could you give that as free when some of the Clare challenges were late and reckless? Towards the end when they knew they were out of it, they were trying to injure as many Galway players as they could and getting away with it e.g. Bugler's late shoulder charge on Joe Gantley's head after he had scored a point which went unpunished. tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 05/07/2011 10:33:41 975074 Link 0 |
Indeed tommy k - McInerney wasn't the only Clareman who should have got the line. Irony seems to escape one or two Clare people on here. Ailteoir (Galway) - Posts: 921 - 06/07/2011 19:41:22 976731 Link 0 |
tommy k they must have saw Wexford the night before and said that sounds like a good way to stop a more talented team. freetaker1 (Limerick) - Posts: 758 - 06/07/2011 20:19:13 976770 Link 0 |
Good point TommyK, my fear as the end of the game approached was that at least one of our lads would miss the next game due to some reckless 'challenge' yet during the game referee Kirwan punished our lads for some very innoculous 'fouls' to the extent that Clare had 10 points from frees compared to our 3.In a tight game that sort of reffing could make all the difference. Actually a better piece of skill, without pushing anyone, was Kevin Downes score off the hurl from the left hand side in the first half v Wexford. Threw the defender one way then the other all with the ball on the stick then over the bar off his left side. Fabulous score. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2581 - 07/07/2011 12:29:56 977163 Link 0 |

I remember watching this on TV last sunday and thinking that the defender was holding Canning out and therefore Canning was entitled to buck him out of the way, I have just watched it again after a load of people on here saying it was a free out, the Clare defender actually latches onto Canning and in my opinion he is entitled to get him out of his way, it would have been a very soft free out. Great goal by the way. grandagrokepoke (Down) - Posts: 347 - 07/07/2011 16:10:56 977450 Link 0 |

grandagrokepoke (great username by the way) you've got it exactly right. The defender O'Connell was pushing into JC's chest with his head to illegally try to stop him so JC was entitled to brush him aside like he did as I watched it again very closely and as I said before if that was a free then there should have been at least 6 or 7 other frees given to Galway that were not given for much worse offences. tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 07/07/2011 20:23:54 977751 Link 0 |
Lads this isnt even his best goal. The goal he got against tipp a few years ago in the league is the best goal I ever saw. There quiet simply was never a better hurler. His 4 or 5 best goals are probably the 4 or 5 best goals ever, Shefflin while a great was never capable of this class. He has not as good a pair of hands and definitely has not the strength of Canning. Nobody compares to him, he is just in the wrong county and expected to carry us. loughreaabu (Galway) - Posts: 29 - 08/07/2011 12:37:10 978086 Link 0 |
Loughreabu, I have Canning down as POTENTIALLY better than Shefflin. But he's not there yet I reckon. What puts him up there for me, is exactly what you've said. It's often claimed that Ring frequently carried Cork. Canning sometimes does the same for Galway. Shefflin is an outstanding player. Unfortunately, because DJ Carey was brilliant but also over-rated, Shefflin's enormity wasn't really realised until recently. But Shefflin has never had to carry Kilkenny. They are the greatest team of all time. They could make me look good! Put Canning in among them and we'd definately see the greatest individual displays ever. Culchie, I agree with you that DJ was overrated, id have Shefflin any day ahead of him. Canning has to do it for a long period of time like Shefflin did. I just don't think the buzz is there as much when Shefflin gets the ball as when Canning does. From what I heard of Ring, his physical strength was what set him apart from the rest so for their era, Canning is a modern day Ring but I would have to imagine he is stronger. Eoin kelly was also up there at his peak. Hes a complete genius and I believe miles ahead of DJ also. loughreaabu (Galway) - Posts: 29 - 08/07/2011 13:42:42 978148 Link 0 |
Canning has too much hair, to be compared to Ring. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 4357 - 08/07/2011 14:40:58 978217 Link 0 |
