Rory McIlroy to play for Britain

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Rory McIlroy has said he will play for Britain in the 2016 Olympics:
"I'd probably play for Great Britain," he says. "I have a British passport. It's a bit of an awkward question. It would be huge play in an Olympics and I'd love to get an Olympic medal one day."

Why is there a debate on his nationality when he has spoken?

Many, many people represent Britain who are not British.

Half the English cricket and rugby teams, Barry McGuigan...........could go on all day....

But it is not important.

Rory's not cutting his British links pardon the pun, he knows an OBE MBE or even a KBE could be his if he was to win a major PGA event .

I think Rory came from a mixed marriage but seems to see himself as more Unionist and British than Irish. That's his choice, the same choice that young Catholic soccer players have.......AND which Unionists moan about.

I reckon he sees himself as a man and a golfer and doesn't bother with all the nationalist and unionist nonsense

So do 66% of Catholics according to that survey we have a thread on.

Maybe he just wants to be part of the crowd...........

I really hope he wins this and accepts the trophy wearing an Orange sash.

Irish speaker, hurler, Irish musician all my life.

However the Johnny come lately's who discovered they were "Irish" about 6 years ago annoy me.

Also, I hate Nationalists because they think they are better than other races, and I hate those who feel inferior to England.

As you know, I feel superior to everyone....

When Rory stood at the 1st tee box yesterday the on course announcer announced him to the public as follows "From Northern Ireland,Ireland Rory McIlroy"Where he is from is not in question and im sure in the days to come we will see Rory pictured several times with the tri-colour.Best of luck Wee Mac.

Maybe its a good thing that BOTH traditions can get behind the same youngster for a change and maybe he feels that he is representing both sides too !!
I did see some tricolours in the crowd following Rory !!

Not too sure about the tri-colour bit. However I did smile when I saw some supporters on the course waving tri-colours. It appears that very much like McDowell he is trying to steer an "Alliance" type course and not offend either side of the divide. He did indeed say he would probably represent the U.K. in the Olympics if Golf was made an Olympic Sport. Obviously as a Nationalist (Nice to know that patrique hates me) I regret this, but its a free world and he is entitled to represent either the UK or The Republic as he sees fit. Both himself and McDowell are products of mixed marriages so I suppose their attitude is what one might expect. Anyhow as I said earlier we had all this discussion a year ago.

Maybe he just genuinely doesn't care in the slightest. Not everyone is as bitter as you

Intolerance is an awful thing. The partitionist revisionists talk about respect for all traditions........ EXCEPT for Irish Republicans and Nationalists of course who are demonized by the Union Jack waving, West Brit element in Ireland. Corkcelt is one of the most fair minded posters on HS and to call him a bigot says more about the small minded bitter loons that post this nonsense.....BUT are they genuine so called Gaels? I doubt it very much.

BIRDIED the FIRST.

If he wins this he can play for whoever he likes.

and Cork Celt is an honourable man. It is Maggie T. Adolf H type nationalists I dislike, the ones who think they are better than others by dint of birth.

I'd be much more of a republican myself.....

I knew that there would be a thread started about Rorys nationality,I would imagine he would be like 90% of NIs population,he has other things on his mind than a flag. The 10% from both sides that worry about a union flag or tricolour need to get a life.Is it not enough that we have arguably the greatest talent on the planet at the moment without lowering it to politics?
