I dont object to the titanic quarter. However I agree with fortyfive we have great successes in the north of this land to celebrate and remember but we seem to chose two failures to name our public spaces and infrastructure by. I wonder does that not tell us something about our "culture"

The Titanic story is known the world over!......The story of Belfast linen mills isn't!!!!.....Thats why it is a tourist attraction!!! Buhh!!!

As for the reason why so much money is pumped into it, sure is it not obvious after all these years, the British govts policy of what I call "Pacify with Pounds!". Whenever the North rears its ugly head, the British government just throw money at the trouble and it goes away for a while!!
Sure where else is there a 'democratic' state (where everyone is in power and nobody in opposition just so everybody feels good about themselves) in which over half the population are employed by the government??!!.....What a farce!!....Just goes to show, when a problem arises just give em a few jobs and a bit of money and it all goes away!!!

By the way, why are ye complaining about Titanic being a failure and yet being celebrated, sure hasn't the struggle to make this island a 32 county Republic been a failure in progress for 800 years and yet ye celebrate that fact every chance ye get!!!

Both Wolfe Tone and Jack Dawson would be turning in their graves at the hypocracy on here!!

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael

Look lads, the fact we are talking about a ship 100 years later goes to show the impact the ship and the disaster has had on the world.

i agree with that sentiment yew, the ship is still being talked about 100 years on, and it captures the imagination of people around the world, therefore has some tourism appeal, but the fact remains that it is the most famous balls up in history. and if money can be made from that then so be it.

Agreed. However, the celebration of failure is not confined to the North, it's endemic. 1798, 1867, 1916. Kinsale, Aughrim, killala, Ballingarry etc all failures

The siege of derry is a rare example of success being celebrated but is shunned by a large sector of the population

Yet it was the men of Ulster who gave Cromwell his ONLY ever defeat in conflict as The Battle of Clonmel. Owen Roe O'Neill's army marched South for 2 weeks and routed Cromwell with the loss of 3000 of his New Model Army. It was the Ulster clans who fought for Ireland during the Elizabethan Wars while Dublin, most of Leinster and Queenstown were quiet happily living under English rule. Dublin and Cork are very much English colonial towns.

The absolute maximum that historians reckon was lost by Cromwell at Clonmel was 2,500, with most putting the figure at 1,500.

O'Neill's army didn't defeat Cromwell in the battle either, they repelled his first assault and then ran away before the town surrendered..............

The usual level of accuracy from your bigoted posts.

Face facts black and white the ONLY province on this island that can accurately call itself Irish is Ulster. The West of Ireland was colonised by Galicians and Basques, that's why you are all dark haired and skinned right along the West. The Pale is that, the original English garrison bastion going back centuries well before The Plantation while Cork showed it's true colours a few weeks ago when they waved Union Flags for Lizzie Windso; Rebel county??. Ulster was always at the forefront of rebellion against English rule and waffle all you want. It was Cromwell who called for Peace terms in Clonmel, he knew his army couldn't have taken more of the losses they did and it was an Ulster army that gave him that defeat. The seat of religion on the island is Armagh while the best harpists and music makers were from Ulster. You should be thankful we allow you outside Ulster to even call yourselves Irishbecause historically you are not.

No I work for myself, I will not be moved from my land. If Britain paid EVERY Northern Nationalist a MILLION pound each it still wouldn't be enough to compensate us. This is OUR land.

Ulster can call itself Irish, as it is in Ireland, so in that you are correct.

However you do seem to be confused as to where the other three provinces are.

Just so you know they (Leinster, Munster and Connacht in case you weren't sure) are also in Ireland.

This means that they can also, quite accurately, be described as Irish.

Now this is where it might get a little complicated for you so I'll explain it as best I can. The reason that Ulster can call itself Irish is in fact the exact same reason that the other three (Again they're called Leinster, Munster and Connacht but don't worry about names just yet) can be called Irish.
