For many years now County Down have been called the aristocrats of Ulster football, what evidence is there to support this statement, ulster gaels might ask? TheGateKeeper (Tyrone) - Posts: 2843 - 30/05/2011 21:25:17 943969 Link 0 |

In my lifetime, Down are the aristocrats of Ulster football. When I was born, 58 TODAY, Tyrone, Down, Derry, Donegal and fermanagh had not won Ulster. Not a title between them. Cavan were well ahead, and Antrim comfortably in 2nd place with 11. They still have 11, even Tyrone are ahead of Antrim now so things do change. patrique (Antrim) - Posts: 13709 - 30/05/2011 21:48:00 944015 Link 0 |

What a sad little man, so much bitterness and jealousy . . . Anyway, I wish Tyrone all the very best as they start their Ulster SFC campaign this weekend. Burnsey (Down) - Posts: 561 - 31/05/2011 09:03:25 944068 Link 0 |

I would have thought that being successful bares little on what is meant by "aristocrats of ulster football". I would take this to mean they have a philosophy and style that they are unwilling to compromise on. This has to be commended but the way the game has evolved would seem naieve and detrimental to success. Open expansive football, in my opinion, unfortunately is dead and Downs historical style of play will probably yield little success unless they compromise and adapt. How about that Down changed the way football was played in Ulster, were the first team to bring Sam across the border and win 3 all irelands in one decade which cavan did not do, also they were never defeated in an all ireland final until last year, beat Kerry teams with Mick O'Connell and Mick O'Dwyer, attracted the largest ever crowd to Croke Park, had players like Paddy Doherty ,James McCartan Snr and Sean O'Neill who is on the team of the millenium? Also i dont often hear Cavan people complain about not being called the aristocrats cboyle92 (Down) - Posts: 184 - 31/05/2011 10:52:31 944144 Link 0 |

Down blew it on Saturday. Makes it far too easy now for Tyrone to win Ulster, yet again. OGarmaile (Tyrone) - Posts: 248 - 31/05/2011 12:24:53 944269 Link 0 |
Cavan are the aristocrats of Ulster football, 39 titles is an incredible haul, and we wont be knocked of our perch in any of our lifetimes. Sergeant_Slash (Cavan) - Posts: 2182 - 31/05/2011 12:31:39 944280 Link 0 |
hard to see cavan getting another one in the next 37 years, the way they are going about it. OGarmaile (Tyrone) - Posts: 248 - 31/05/2011 12:37:00 944286 Link 0 |
