Brian Carty fails to tell us anything about the action that is taking place. He speaks incredibly slowly and is totally unsuited to radio. And television to be perfectly honest. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2581 - 03/05/2011 16:58:39 922835 Link 0 |

RTE Radio should use their best and most experienced radio commentator for all the big games, and that person is Brian Carthy. He has been commentating for so many years and his knowledge of all things GAA is second to none. I have always noticed that he works very well with analyists like Barney Rock and Len Gaynor, and with Micheal retired, he should be RTE Radio's commentator on this year's All-Ireland Finals. I cannot understand RTE getting their TV commentators to do Radio as it just does not work. The same applies to these soccer and rugby commentators doing GAA, as it is embarrassing at times. 147sportsman (Galway) - Posts: 44 - 03/05/2011 17:11:22 922852 Link 0 |

Ye must be joking about Brian Carty?? The only time he actually mentions what going on is "And the Right-Footed Kick from McDonnell, and a Poinnnt for Armagh". By the time he gets this nugget of wise observation out the kickout had been taken. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2581 - 03/05/2011 18:46:26 922944 Link 0 |
If you look at videos of matches in the late 1980s early 90s, ger canning sounded completely different, maybe the fact his got older. He was also better, with controlled excitement, usually saying 'its A GOAL' or 'A GOAL'. He also described the play better and mentioned every player on the ball. Today he kind looses the run of himself in excitment but also sounds quite bored sometimes. He can make a good match sound bad and a bad match sound good. I think daragh moloney doesnt know anything about hurling thats why he isnt used for hurling matches so what good is he. Marty is worse than ger canning, the sound of his voice and his patronising style makes me change channel. o hehir actually in my view was poor on tv near the end but did have a great style when on radio. micheal o muircheartaigh was the best on radio but i think they should find a young new man to take his place that will last a long time. mygirl (UK) - Posts: 27 - 03/05/2011 19:30:25 922975 Link 0 |

I have to b careful here as all previous attempts to have a serious debate about rte's coverge or lack of it has been blocked - cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1691 - 03/05/2011 19:58:31 923000 Link 0 |
RTE should do a trial that is open to everyone. Just play a part of a game and let a person commentate on it. They would find some Gems. Marty, Ger and likes are great commentators, but we need someone new, someone who can make you completely visualise the game from your car and of course bring the passion and excitement that Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Michael O'Hehir brought to a match. jimmy90 (Kildare) - Posts: 160 - 03/05/2011 20:26:40 923020 Link 0 |
brendan hennessy from kcr does a decent job. at least you know whos playing and what direction. there must be a few more around the country who could make it. that marty morissey doesnt let you know what's the game all about topofthetown (Carlow) - Posts: 64 - 03/05/2011 21:29:47 923069 Link 0 |
Deisebhoy - I couldn't have said it better myself! We were only talking the other day of what a loss Mícheál is to our games............he was a dream to listen to. How many people tuned in to Mícheál while muting the t.v. commentary? Radio 1 has lost a listener if they're going to stick with Brian Carthy or Marty Morrissey.... choctaw (Cork) - Posts: 274 - 03/05/2011 21:38:52 923082 Link 0 |
I'm sure there are suitable replacements out there if RTE wanted to find one. You need a commentator who has some feeling/love/enthusiasm for the game as for instance Michael Corcoran has for rugby. I believe those in the Sports Dept in RTE look on GAA as a threat to their first love rugby and as a result will not give the job to anyone with an enthusiasm for hurling or football. M Morrissey is a case in point he seems to delight in showing up the percieved faults in our games while at the same time fawning over the delights of rugby (listen to saturday sport). Martin Kiely is a very good commentator from Limerick/Tipp who gets an occasional run but is aparently too GAA for the RTE sports Dept. Evanne Ni Chuilinn Joanne Cantwell and Jacqui Hurley who have GAA backgrounds, are good presenters and are photogenic to boot are being moved over to rugby too. mod (Mayo) - Posts: 859 - 04/05/2011 13:30:56 923366 Link 0 |

Saying Joanne Cantwell 'has a GAA background' is underselling her achievements a bit don't you think? doublehop (Kildare) - Posts: 4172 - 04/05/2011 14:44:32 923453 Link 0 |

there can only be one sucesser and it has to be Brian Carthy,he,s head and shoulders better than the rest.Moressey,Maloney,Canning dont have a clue compared to carthys knowledge of the game.He should have been the main commentator with rte for years now.I was never a big Michael o Muircheartaigh fan as i though he waffled his way through games when he couldnt recognise players. fowler23 (Monaghan) - Posts: 1 - 04/05/2011 15:04:53 923475 Link 0 |
