Who should get Micheal O Muircheartaighs job?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Who does everyone think should get the big job on the radio replacing the legend that was Micheal O Muircheartaigh. My pick would have to be Ger Canning with Marty Morrissey taking over the main tv slot. Anyone have any other favs.

one thing which is evident - the lack of quality rte commentators. brian carty is the best in my opinion following by darragh maloney.

I would agree with Darragh Maloney as well (if it is to come from within RTE ranks). Otherwise there are surely a few decent commentators from around the local radio stations or even Newstalk or TG4 who would be more suitable for the job on Radio 1. Who knows what will happen though? With Ryle Nugent head of sport in Montrose you'd imagine he will understand Swahili as well as he understands what your average GAA fan would want to hear.

Rte is poor in my view when it comes to sports coverage and pannellists in general, ironically the commentators are OK.

The formula they use Straight Guy and polemicist and a mediator.

Soccer straight guy Giles Polemicist Dunphy mediator Bill
Rugby Pope Hook .........
Gaa O Rourke Spillane................

same old set up with each sport, so what is said is a formula designed to get people back up but is really poor analysis and faux debate

good to get that out phew

Don't mind Daragh Maloney or Brian Carty doing the match commentary. Canning is poor enough but still preferable to Morrissey.

Generally don't mind the post-game analysis. O'Rourke is generally excellent, Spillane offers entertaining sound-bites while Brolly just looks a bit bored and smug. Could do with a small shake-up there but nothing major. Duignan works well as an in-game analyst in hurling while Farrell, Mulcahy and Loughnane are always worth a listen.

My major gripe with RTE's coverage of GAA is that it need a proper preview show on a Friday night - a decent hour-long programme that wraps up the week's news and looks ahead to the weekend's action in a similar vein to the excellent Seo Spoirt on TG4.

Darragh Moloney is the best GAA commentator in RTE by a country mile. But I think hes committed to other sports aswell so Ger Canning will be the lead TV man for a while yet. Marty is nearly as bad as the TV3 commentators I wouldnt have him near a microphone if I was in charge.

Theres no obvious replacement for Muircheartaigh on the radio. How do you replace a legend of that calibre? Brian Carthy isnt fit to clean Michaels boots, Id go with one of the younger lads on RTE radio to replace him Maybe Gary Moran.

Id prefer RTE to introduce more young talent in this area and dispense with the ones who obviously are not cut out for it.

Darragh Maloney by a country mile, personally I dont see why they need different commentators for tv and radio, let the one commentary do it all, if the caller is good it will suffice for both mediums

Whatever or whoever but anyone who thinks Ger Canning is a commentator of anything let alone Gaelic football is dreaming. In my opinion his grasp of both football and the English language are both sub standard and for the want of a better term inane.
His comments on how the game should be played while trying to describe action are unbelievable not to mention he most likely never kicked a ball in his life.

i think they should put mart morrisey and ger canning on the radio together that way when am watching the match on tv we wont have them commentating there both very annoying. darragh moloney is the only good commentator we have in irish sport at moment throughout all the sports.disagree about the panellists on rte have to say there great to watch purely for entertainment dont agree with them on most things but they have some good arguements

Ger Canning is really annoying.

We know Ger, you've mentioned it every year since 1980.
