919957 folks travellers dont give the irish a bad name the irish people en masse do a great job of that themselves and we fully deserve our reputation as the laziest greediest people on the planet - and the age old stereotype of the thick paddy is well and truly confirmed on a global stage as we refuse to acknowledge our failings and balme everyone but the person in the mirror
For once Liatroid, spot on.
is ballboy now telling us that he and all his lazy, greedy thick paddy rugby followers have given ireland a bad name ?

919941 I've never said a word about contraception or pre-marital relationships on this forum, as neither of them bother me in the slightest.
And I dare say you dont bother them too much either!

Not really. I can't say there's many Aborigines around Kilkenny, or in UL for that matter. So I'd rather not comment on them.

Indeed.
From what I've heard about the Aborigines (mainly from a Kiwi former colleague of mine who worked in Oz for a long time) is that they've huge problems with alcoholism, and sniffing petrol and that sort of thing. As I've said, I really don't know why there are problems, what the problems are, so I don't want to comment on it. With Travellers, I have a fair idea of the community.

4 Economics modules and 4 Law ones for me seamus. Bad times, I have the head down the last week or so, highly frustrating in weather like this. I suppose it really depends on the course you're in, I know some people like yourself with only maybe one or two exams, but then others have upwards of 6. A lot of courses now have continuous assessment, unfortunately mine does not and 95% of the module hinges on one exam. The UCD library is a chilling place at the moment, not an ounce of cheer in it.
Good luck with them anyway man.

Same to you Sergeant.
Yeah, in UL, almost all people would have some element of continuous assessment. Even my two exams are only 40% and 60% of the marks for those modules. As for the library, in UL, it's a lot different. You head down, you get talking to someone you know, you waste time...not good from a study point of view. Then again, studying at home isn't easy. I just re-discovered 'God, the Devil and Bob', a fantastic animated show made about 10 years ago, on Youtube, and I've watched all 13 episodes on there. Curse Youtube, curse You.

Seamus89:
They are marginalised and the majority live in poverty hence have no real future which might point why they turn to substance abuse and crime thus proofing how poverty can be associated with crime. One of the differences between them and the travellers is that a lot of travellers although living in caravans are not living in poverty thanks to mostly the illigitimate "business's". That fact is that travellers in ireland manage to marginalise themselves where it is the opposite in australia, centuries of "apartheid" which australian seems to fly under the radar in relation to this has marginilised them.
A good book that outlines this is "The new Rulers of the world" by John Pilinger "The final chapter, 'The Chosen Ones', sees Pilger return to his home country of Australia to continue a thirty-year engagement with the struggle of the Aboriginal people against the apartheid behind the picture postcard impression of Australia. He reports the anguished comments of Dr Richard Murray, whose patients are all Aboriginal: 'By most measures of indigenous health, Australia is last in the world. The Aboriginal people suffer from diseases we saw the end of in the Edinburgh slums in the last century, like rheumatic fever. Here it is the highest ever reported in the world. And diabetes, which affects up to a quarter of the adult Aboriginal population, causing kidney failure and diabetic blindness.' The cause? 'Poverty and dispossession', answers Dr Murray, pointing out that ninety per cent of overcrowded households in Australia are Aboriginal (who comprise just two per cent of the population). Moreover, the Australian government spends about 25 per cent less per capita on the health of the Aboriginal people compared to the rest of the population. "
So you'll see above he outlines the cuase as "poverty and dispossession" in relation to disease but seen as that their are high levels of crime and substance abuse amoung this part od society would poverty not point to a reason that their are high levels of crime too. It's one of the reasons not the only one. But you seem to think upbringing and morals are the only reason for crime. MY point is that it maybe one but not then main one and there are many more reasons which you fail to take into account in your reasoning!! Surely studying ploitics would open your eyes to that idea in general it's not as easy to define the reason for crime as you point out and poverty one of the reasons at the top of the list.

that might be true for the city, by Royal charter of course, but up around Galmoy and Gatabawn the population is deeply aboriginal.

if someone on here put up a thread sayingrepublicans misbehaving and showed the regular riots in belfast it would be supported without question by the sinn fein/ ira posters on here - but yet the same people can comdem the exact same actions when it involves travellers- are the republicans actions somehow nobel or justified or are they just common thugs- i like all rational people think the later!

Traveller Community Misbehaving is the title of the thread so the gombeen posters talk about the ira. if the title of the thread was 'what your favourite flavour of ice cream' the gombeen would still have to talk about teh ira- sad sad lives.

Can I assume from your comment liathroidboy that you are in fact a traveller and that your much oft mentioned business interests extends to carpets/tarmac? You do like to claim that you travel a lot and I am simply putting 2 and 2 together! As for the half a helicopter, does this translate into 'Hiace Van'?
