GAA TV Channel not ruled out

The GAA's Director of Communications has not ruled out the establishment of a GAA television channel in the future.

Lisa Clancy told TV3 that, while it's not on the agenda at the moment, it could be an option going forward.

There have been calls in the past for the GAA to set up their own channel in a bid to increase access to games, particularly overseas. Last year Ulster Council Secretary Danny Murphy said he believed the association "has to set up its own TV channel" "sooner or later".

As outlined by Director General Paraic Duffy in his recent Annual report, GAA TV is to be established prior to the start of the championship but this refers to an enhanced video section on the gaa.ie website. During last year's championship Croke Park produced a weekly ten minute online magazine show, Round the Square, which is to return in 2011.

Clancy told TV3 "our job is to promote Gaelic Games and culture so we'll stick to what we're good at, at the moment". However she added "we're always looking at where we're going in the future".

If that moves away from RTE that's a nice individual contract to go after... but anyways it probably wont happen

The only concern I would have Jim , is that it may exclude the casual viewer from watching GAA. The positive feature with channels like tg4 and rte is that anyone can enjoy a Gaelic game , even if they just randomly hit upon it. I believe that anyone who inadvertently switched to a big football or Hurling encounter couldnt help themselves but get drawen in by the spectacle. So non GAA people get an opportunity to see what all the fuss is about. Just a thought.

Maybe RTE/TG4 can still have a highlights show.

This is needed and is necessary:
Lets lookat the facts :-
1. RTE coverage is poor - the analysis of the club's with financial hardship was very poor and inaccurate on sunday evening
2. Failure to give all the results but at tea time and on their gaa programmes
3. a pro-dublin stance
4. a complete failure to promote or highligh big games
5. the late late show and its abysmal gaa night
6. no coverage of mid-week gaa news stories or matches note the recent leinster or ulster gaa u-21 champ.
7. to much ridicious analysis
8 only for tg4
9. bbc ni complete contempt for gaa
10. was it just me or was there no coverage of the all -ireland colleges hurling final on , on sat evening news - but we get horse racing from navan
11. english soccer gets a higher profile on rte
12. irish indo gives an inadequate gaa coverage for a so called irish national newspaper...

In this day and age there is no reason we cant have a match of the day type highlights programme to include a range of highlights from across all divisons in Hurling and football . The weaker county should not be ignored. I am sure Setanta could do something like this?

ok folks this would mean a serious loss of revenue- no tv3 money, no rte money, no tg4 money, no setanta money. while we can debate the merits all day long about it - it makes completely no sense in economic terms- those above fight over games which drives the price up and up, a gaa channel would be handed the games for free- massive shortfall in money which in economic terms would mean potentially doubling ticket prices. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but on matters like this talking economically is all that is important- especially for an organisation in decline like the gaa. the gaa should immediately rename croker look at theirfu they got over 10 million for 3 years to use the name aviva - the only people who complain about things like this are those who havent a business brain cell to their name and think that everything should be free i.e. want everything but prepared to pay for nothing

A gaa channel would be a huge success imo. Just think of all the great games we miss every year. The brilliant u21 championships get practically no coverage despite huge national interest and the fact they regularly throw up some of the best matches of the year. Likewise with the minor championships. The splitting of the championship matches between tv3 and rte is painful as tv3's commentators, analyists (except mcgee) and presenters are a pale imitation of rte. Also there is the fact that the best league matches go to setanta which nobody in my experience has. The gaa is now big enough and popular enough to sustain it's own channel.

Agree totally with all except liathroid boy (in good company then) RTE treatment of GAA borders on contempt for our national games. They are not even bothered to read out the national league scores on Sunday Night (there were wins for Derry Galway Wicklow etc.) . On one Sunday the sports reporter said we have no time for the GAA scores now you can check them on our web site. There also seems to be a policy to highlight the negative e.g. on Saturday sports recently the preview for the coming weekend consisted of Marty Morrissey grilling some GAA official as to why the Dublin Mayo match was not played on Fri. No mention of any other fixtures. Last wekend rugby ruled on RTE and barely a mention was given before the match to the double header in Croke Park or indeed any other GAA fare for that matter.

My god i tought people would laugh at this idea when they saw this!!

THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!!!...

If it was to happen it wouldnt last a year, imagine the expenses of running a tv station.

Is this a late April fools?.. Its gas - We did a 10 minutes internet video... now we can start a TV channel... Idiotic

There is plenty of GAA coverage on Rte, tv3 and Tg4..

The fact of the matter is that it woulds have viewing audiences 2 days a week tops!.. a disaster waiting to happen

GAA TV should be a paid subscription station for the Overseas market. And if you wish to pay for it,in Ireland aswell.
There are Thousands of GAA games played all over the world every weekend,Im sure a series of Highlights of them would go down well
I.E a 30 min show rounding up all thats happening in Carlow Gaa or London.
Also instead of replaying Dublin v Down on a Tuesday eve,Why not get 10 minute highlights from each div 1 game and show it instead?
It is plausable and it would be up to the PRO of each county to submit Club results
You could also have a user submitted highlights,Anyone with a camcorder and a Laptop could send in highlights of any game.

Regards RTE/TV3 Coverage, when the rights are up for negotiation,The packages should include X amount of Champ Games/ X of Lge/ x of O Byrne/u 21/minor/schools etc... also they should demand 3/4 mins of coverage on all major news bulletins. 1 o clock,6.1,9 o clock

Shea, the overseas market is potentially huge, emigres like myself will end up subscribing to Premier Sports when the championship starts and as well as the GAA you get a whole lot of **** besides. With thousands emigrating weekly this could be a lifeline for a lot of people, myself included.
