Galway vs Tipp: Attendance

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

When Tipp come to Pearse Stadium to play Galway it will be Galways last HOME game of the year. Their Manager John McIntyre felt the need to PLEAD to Galway fans to come to see the match. This saddens me for a few reasons:

1. Tipp are the All Ireland champions and should AUTOMATICALLY draw a huge crowd.

2. Galway have a very good team which should AUTOMATICALLY draw a huge crowd.

3. These two teams played a fantastic game last year against each other which should AUTOMATICALLY draw a huge crowd.

There's no problem getting big crowds for Rugby so why did McIntyre feel the need to plead? Is hurling gone that weak?

1 Tipp supporters will wait till important matches

2 (a) Galway have yet to prove they are a good team
(b) Put the game in ballinasloe or athenry an you might get a larger Galway support

3 Rugby in galway: large crowds: where?

Galway are more interested in pride parades and arts festivals then sport. The only reason the races are so successful is because they get to dress up. In the Football the club scene is ran by Mayo and Roscommon and in the hurling its Tipp and Clare men keeping it alive. There was 600 at the the game with the all Ireland champions Cork last week.

Well this certainly isn't true for a start.

never mind paddy lads and i hope a big crowd goes to the game. it is a game i would like to see myself. i think John McIntyre had to plead. is it true there was only 2,000 at the galway kilkenny game? having said that attendances are falling at ALL sports lately.

Galway club hurling being kept alive by Tipp and Clare man, most stupid comment I have ever read here. 10,000+ people attended both semi finals, county final and county final replay last year.
Galway club football, couldn't comment (and couldn't care less)

@onlyhurling:

My post above wasn't really about Tipp supporters as it wasn't THEIR manager asking for support or THEIR team playing their last home game of the year. The Rugby crowds I referred to is in general around the country. I agree Athenry might be a better place for the match. Galway ARE a good team, that's almost indesputable.

I think the TG4 coverage is a factor in the poor attendances. I mean TG4 is like a Galway GAA version of the Man Utd soccer station. Galway are on there, nearly every week. So far, in this year's leagues, it has been (or will be) possible to see full (live or deferred) coverage of the hurlers versus Cork, Kilkenny, Dublin & Tipp. I think even the Wexford game may have been covered. In football, TG4 even showed Galway v Mayo & Monaghan in the NFL, when everyone knew that these counties wouldn't be at the business end of the div1 league table. Being a dedicated follower of both the Galway hurling & football team, I'm delighted that we have our own dedicated TV channel!!

Still paddyogall its great to be top of Div 1 in the hurling with 3 club AI's already in the bag. Remind us what the Mayo hurlers have won again or since when did Mayo last win a football AI - 60 years ago was it? Its hilarious to see your comments. By the way its not long ago that Mayo footballers had a Kerry man and a Derry man running the show there but they still couldn't even BUY an AI!!

Right so that why tipp have sold more season tickets than most counties over the last few years? There's been a waiting list for season tickets for the last 3 years! Tipp always get decent number at matches.

paddyogall: You'll only get a clare crowd at a match when their winning.

And sure Paddy, if Galway didn't host the pride parade you'd be forced to drive all the way to Dublin for your big day out so I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

And indeed, thank God for Mayo club football. Where would we be without it. And look at all it's achieved for Mayo over the years. For the ladies anyway. That is, while ye had a ladies team.

Timing isnt great with a lot of the league matches this year, there has been a lot of senior county league matches on the same days in Tipp and i'm playing Junior league this Sunday so i wont make it, attendances are down a fair bit from last year

Hilarious stuff as usual from Paddy

Galway attendances have been awful this year, worse than I can ever remember, and while the rugby crowd is generally poor in Connacht, more go to those games than have turned up on average. Both codes have been poor - and Galway fans aren't the best anyway. Moaning about Pearse Stadium might have some merit in July when the place is choked up, but there have been no difficulties in the years I've been going to League games there. TV isn't a factor either, as while we do seem to be on more than others thats primarily because of the footballers as well. If it is a factor anyway, its minor.

I really hope there will be a good crowd on Sunday, as the team making huge sacrfices for our counties benefit deserve it, whether we are winning or not

What's the biggest crowd attendance at a rugby match in Galway?

I don't agree that the TV issue is minor, in relation to attendances. Many 'supporters' want to see the teams play, but will avail of the cheaper handier option, if it's there. You'll usually get bigger crowds to games that aren't televised. Last year's LHC replay with Offaly was a good example. There was a very sizeable crowd of Galway & Offaly fans in Portlaoise. The match was not on TV. Anyone that wanted to see it had to attend.

Biggest tend to be the interpros, which get 4-6000 or so, slightly less for Ulster

You're right to a degree, some people will avail of the option, but its not a new problem, and its a problem in the spring whether we're on tv or not. The Offaly game was the Championship, and a match that a lot of people expected us to win easily in the first instance, and when we didn't the replay became an attractive game to go and see. Comparing league and championship is apples and oranges.

@Real Kerry Fan:

I wasn't talking about Galway when I said about the rugby attendances. That was pretty much anywhere in Ireland. I've never heard anyone plea for a crowd in rugby. The young guys I meet always seem to talk about Liverpool and Man United all the time but never hurling or football.
