Cricket For Croker

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After Irelands great win over England yesterday, there expecting a massive crowd when England come over in august to play us in clontarf. As clontarf is a small ground and wont hold many i wonder would the gaa allow Ireland play in croke park?? I know its unlikely but in fairness it would be great to beat them at here own sport in croker...And forget about soccer and rugby being the gaas biggest trett maybe they should worry about cricket...

Might have some bandwagon attention for a while until the hype machine dies down but in reality cricket has a limited base in Ireland . Credit to the team on there achievement but unlikley that the sport will capture the interest of many once things settle

Pitch would be too small. No matter which way the wicket was placed two sides would have ridiculously short boundaries. With the likes of Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Kevin O'Brien playing they would be tonking 6's into the top tiers!

Who (other than the elite) could possibly have time on a Tuesday morning & afternoon to watch these county championship games go on in England, where they stop for tea & lunch & other such rubbish. That side of it I cant understand. Thats cricket at its most horrible!
But the faster game (20/20 or ODI) can be a bit more entertaining as was evidenced by Irelands fantastic win the other day. A fantastic achievement it must be said. The India v England game a few days before also seemed like a cracker, and I'm only judging this on the snippets I saw on Sky Sports News.
As for Cricket for Croker, no, that wont be happening, I guarantee you that.

Ireland had a fantastic win on Wednesday - one of the great sporting achievements this nation had - beating a top class team, a contender for the World cup, the old enemy and at a sport which historically is a minority game here, this has grabbed the sporting headlines all over India, Australia, N. Zealand etc
As regards playing it in Croke Park , Cricket has been played here before it has owned by the GAA and in the early part of the 1900's - would it be a sucess- i don't think so , even though i would go i feel the southern media hasn't given it the recognition it deserves - only interested in rugby and soccer, cricket is an all-island, all-ireland game , so well done to all concerned.......

Pitch is definitely too small. Besides of any month I think Croker will be busy enough in August without trying to squeeze this in.

You must never have seen a cricket match! Croker completely wrong size and shape.

I personally would have no problem if it was possible given that we had the rugby and soccer borefests already and cricket is far more interesting game.

There is an interesting crossover here between the Man O' War GAA (football only interestingly!) club in north county Dublin and the Hills cricket club. Indeed I beleive some of Irish squad of recent years were members there?

Congrats to them on wonderful victory the other day.

Less than half a percent of people in ireland understand the rules, have ever watched a game or ever want to. The only ones pertending it's popular is RTE. They have had cricket news as headlines for nearly a month when really it is as relevent to Irish people as chinese chess. So my answer is no, having a criket game in Croke Park is a stupid suggestion as the game wouldn't attract a bigger crowd than a junior b football challenge game in Kilkenny.

In fairness Louth cricket people are not claiming that it is going to be the 'heartbeat of the nation.' They are entitled to their day in the sun. As for the rules, it is pretty straight forward game although whoever made the point regarding the long drawn out nature of test matches has a point. I've long been a casual observer but only get to see the odd one day limitied over match - 50 overs. Wouldn't be mad about the 20 overs game which can be a bit made but is extremely popular in Asia which has the biggest cricket following anywhere.

i think it would be a great idea to let the irish cricket players management and fans the oppurtunity to play at croker after all their achievments over the years they do deserve it i would not be a cricket fan , but i think they should be regonised let them have their day good luck to them .

Cricket was the most popular sport in Ireland, particularly in kilkenny and munster, until WW1 then 'nationalism' and the miltant GAA rules on 'foreign' sports crushed anybody who dared to play

Coylers Elbow, it would probably be big enough for the crowd. I am not complaining about the team it is RTE's coverage that annoys me, it's just not poportunate to the support, it's a bit like the way they cover the magners league while ignoring the NFL and NHL even though there is much more public interest in the later.
