Students over rag week

Uproar in Galway over rag week. From people I know living there its been a terrible week so far. Anti social behaviour, puke, broken glass where. Well if this is the nonsense they are at good riddance to them when they emigrate.

Ive been guity of a bit of rag week enjoyment myself during my college days in limerick.
Galway was always the hot spot for touring students to visit another colleges rag week.

But having fun is ok, as long as it doesnt spill over into stupidness.

There are 2 things colleges can do, or actually 3 things, if they want to alleviate this problem:

1) All the colleges should hold Rag Week on the same week of the year, that would mean there would be no travelling from one college to another for it, or at least people would have to choose to spend the week in one place, and the numbers would be kept down to a more manageable level.

2) They should organise some good events, concerts or something else, because if people are just going to sit around and drink non stop there's bound to be trouble.

Finally, 3) They could just stop holding Rag Week. As a student who very rarely drinks, I'm not exactly representative of the average Rag Week partier, but I can honestly say that I don't have any love for this drunk-fest every year. It brings out the idiocy in even level headed people, and the vast majority of participants do absolutely NOTHING for charity during the week. They just drink, and drink, and drink. If the authorities got rid of it, it would be no loss. That said, I know I'm in a minority, so that ain't going to happen.

you cant ban it student will only organise the week themselves- a facebook page would be set up by the students unions and it wouild all go ahead- you cant stop people drinking for a week- its their right to do so

I remember one year when I was in NUIG there was a mission on in the cathedral during rag week. Talk about bad timing. You had all the students from Dangan\Corrib Village\Newcastle\West Side coming through the college and out past the cathedral on the way into town. All tanked. It was embarrassing being a student wtaching some yobbos shouting and roaring abuse at some of the old folks attending the mission. Now I'm not saying I was a teetotaller by any means but a bit of manners and decorum never cost anyone anything regardless of your state of sobriety.

Seamus89:

As a student that's involved organising some ragg week charity events this year have to say the majority of the students don't do it for charitable reasons.... from what i see this year most start drinking at home and stagger up to the events later in the night and don't give a hell of a lot money to people collecting for charity (at least give something).

With the closing of one of the night life establishments very near to u.l earlier this year (which students played their part in) theirs even more house parties and anti-social stuff going on. I'm no killjoy here and granted their is some money raised for charity which is good but with a lot of students charity is the furthest thing from their mind.

But talking to the security people in the universtity the most trouble comes for people visiting from other colleges probably the same with every colleges ragg week.

I was a student not too long ago and while i went on da **** for the few days i never caused criminal damage. there is always a minority. one thing i will say - i was was talking to a publician in sligo lsat summer and he said only for the students he and most pubs in sligo would be closed so i would say overall it is off huge benefit to have students in your town.

Didn't realise you were a student Hag. Yeah, the infamous 'Lodge' closed a few weeks ago. It was a nice enough place the Lodge, I'll miss it. They just couldn't keep going with the figures on the balance sheet looking like that, and then they tried to increase fees at the door, and sure doesn't everyone know students don't like paying fees :)

As I said, the solution is for all the colleges to get together and say there's one common rag week for all of them. Say, the week before Easter week. Problem solved.

As for what you say about charity, sad but true. Lots of people don't attend any events at all, charitable or otherwise, they just get locked night and night, day after day. What can you do? Sure a lot of people don't actually know that 'RAG' week stands for Raising and Giving. As I said, as an (almost) non-drinker, I'm not very representative, and most people won't agree with me, but I really couldn't care less if it was cancelled.

If you were really going to make it about charity, you'd have to arrange for the lecturers to get tough during that week, like having exams during the lectures, or having essays due the week afterwards. But no lecturer does that, and so it basically just becomes a week off to drink. Very little money is raised, a large amount of criminal damage is done and students everywhere are tarred with the same brush.

I'm a "mature" student Seamus, used to work in the lodge till it closed, apparantly the students wanted free in and be allowed to sneek in their drinks too, they just weren't spending enough to stay open not as fun when you have to deal with them being in a drunken mess but I'll say again it was a minority used to like working there. I see another local establishment has upped entrance fees too during ragg week so we'll see how that goes for them.

Walking over the living bridge yesterday to see 4 lads after knicking a row boat making their way down the river have to say i had a good laugh when they got their boat stuck and had to bail out.

organised drinking is not fun. The best sessions in college were those where you went into town to buy a book and arrived home at 4 in the morning with no money, someone else's hoodie and a big smile. Next morning then you have 3 new numbers on your phone and try to figure out who they are.

I usually went away for rag week to somewhere on the continent and had a few beers there. I miss my student days in galway i have to say. Brilliant city.

This is small beer compared to what decent people in Belfast's Holyland have to put up with from students. For most of the year these layabouts drink, wreck all round them, torture residents, **** and **** in streets, throw rubbish in people's gardens, kick footballs at 4.00 in the morning and scream and shout all night. At long last Queens and the University of Ulster are clamping down with expulsions, warnings and fines.
