about time, what a disgrace keeping the man out of football for 3 years when he clearly wasn,t going to play for them.Just a few delegates with nothing better to be doing than causing trouble

A transfer window month in the GAA? Easily the most ludicrous post I have seen on this forum and that's saying something...

your obviously not well informed as in dublin january has always been the only month you can transfer unil last year they changed to december and this year it was for 10 days in december only.the problem is this is only for players looking to transfer from 1 dublin club to another yet a player looking to transfer from outside dublin to a dublin club can transfer at anytime in the year which seems unfair.thats why i suggest have january as the month for every county and every kind of transfer so they can all be dealt with before the season starts and then there can be no complaints or situations dragging on people will no where they stand

Na Fianna did not object to Sherlock's transfer.

Also the rule used to be that if your club did object all you had to do was sit out a year and then your transfer went through. The rule was changed to protect smaller clubs that are being decimated by big clubs poaching (especially at underage). Fennell's case was the first big test for the rule but unfortunetly the transfer went through.

I don't understand why this became such a huge issue. I understand why the parish rule is there but I really don't see how its supposed to work in an amateur sport, especially in an area like Dublin where there are so many clubs so close to one another.
I certainly don't think the case with Fennell was as black and white as Dermot Crowe makes it out to be. Far be it from me to speculate but I find it hard to believe that Fennell wanted to leave and went to the lengths he did just because he wanted to play Division 1 football and was pursuing some glory hunting line. One could wonder if there were personal issues involved with say another player, manager or club member. Perhaps he didn't want to mention this at the DRA meetings and all the other meetings because he didn't want to make this issue worse than it was for all parties involved.
Regardless of the mitigating circumstances, Fennell wanted to play for another team. Why can't he? I find it bizarre that in this day and age, because a player played for a club for an amount of time, that club now own him, in an amateur sport!! People can say that this will open a whole can of worms but forgive me for saying that such people are incredibly naive if they think this hasn't been happening for years before. Maybe players aren't being 'poached' at senior level as commonly but players leaving small clubs when they're in their mid teens is nothing new. Off the top of my head, I can think of Ballinteer St Johns losing the likes of Ray Cosgrove to Crokes and Declan O'Mahony to Ballyboden. Granted that these guys were young when they left but the potential of players at the ages of 15/16 is fairly evident. Funnily enough, Johns had poached their own player in Tom Mulligan who went on to play for Dublin and later Round Towers - again, no huge issue over this, no big fuss.
So what does that say about transfers - some are a big deal some aren't, because the rule around transfers is loose and is effectively non binding. In my opinion either its involved all the time or not at all.
Trust me when I say, I feel for O'Tooles, its a kick in the butt when one of your best players wants to leave but unfortunately these are the breaks of a sport where no contracts are involved and a rule book is more grey than black and white. But all they did was kick up a big fuss for nothing really. If the guy doesn't want to play for you anymore he doesn't have to, move on

hill16no1man it's a good thing most players don't have your attitude.
If you're a county player you should be trying to bring success to your club and help them progress no matter how big or small they are.
I'd say Fennells antics have left quite a bitter taste in the mouth of all those people who gave up their time to coach him, bring him to games, raise money to provide him with better facilities etc.
Surprised Vincents would have anything to do with him to be honest.

I don't want to make a personal issue out of this so it's fine if you don't want to answer but are you involved with a club hill16no1man? It's just your allegiance seems to be very much with the county first and you don't seem to be too bothered about club loyalty at all.

What was the reason Fennell fell out with the club and wanted to move?
Or is he moving just because he wants to go to a bigger more successful club?

He wanted to win things. First up he wanted to go to Ballymun but then once Gilroy/Whealan got in his ear after his request was rejected he decided that Vincents were for him.

I presume he'll end up in Crokes soon enough too.
