Justice is done...Delighted for Eamon Fennell

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Finally Eamon Fennell has been given his civil right to play football, delighted for him. Nobody in our organisation should have the right to block or stop anybody who wants to play GAA and fair play to the county board for doing what gerry harrington should have done 4 years ago,
Wouldn't it be great if he was to win an All Ireland medal this year.

I can see why you wouldn't want transfers willy nilly but Fennell suffered enough. Good to see it go through.

I dont know what the ins and outs of this were and what politics were at play but it was a shocking episode which highlights the often twilight zone enviroment that gaa officialdom at both club and county level reside in, that it dragged on for so long is totally unbelieveable. Anyway the man can now play club football which is the only good element to this shambles.

Do you think it was his appearance on Take Me Out that did the trick? Maybe it was some form of forfeit requested by the Dublin County Board?

There were serious issues. Some of the bigger clubs here thought they could walk all over smaller ones and hoover up players. Hence the joke of players club and county hopping in Dublin in order to try to win the SFC and the SHC.

Fennell fell victim to that and I agree that he ought not have been left in that position and in any event we have had some 'odd' transfers since. However, the DCB did change the rules a couple of years ago so that should be that, at underage anyway.

Nonsense, no one stopped him playing football just who he could play for. Maybe the Brogans should stop playing for Dublin and decide they want to play for Kerry. Presumably you would be in favour with that since no-one has the right to tell them otherwise.

i think its a disgrace the transfer went through nobody stopped fennell playing football bar himself o'tooles brought him up as a football and not vincents, the only reason he's moving is to win silverware. i Have no problem players moving who can't get playing football for their club and maybe moving to a lesser club. In my opinion its pure greed on fennell's behalf that he moved to win stuff, Some of the greatest players to ever grace a croke park played with small clubs who never won anything eg Pat spillane. Goes against the ethos of the Gaa Watch now as small clubs will fear losing their players to more prominent succesful clubs,

SAD day for gaa

The only one who stoped him from playing was himself not the GAA or the Dublin County Board, best of luck to him anyway

I just hope it dies not open the door for other palyers to leave smaller clubs especially as his non participation for his club over the last few years didn't stop him playing intercounty. A few years ago, A county player here in Meath refused to play with his club as he was looking for a transfer he was subsequently omitted from the county panel and although this may have been because of a Meath bye-law (another daft scenario of the GAA rule book) it shows that different counties run different rules. It's no wonder there are so many interpretations of the GAA rule book

we are talking about club football here so the brogans going to play for kerry would be pointless unless they were living in kerry.
my point is what good was it doing for o tooles by blocking him for the last four years he was not going to go back playing for them after all of this and they knew that as who in the club would actualy get on with him over all of the hype about the transfer so its good to see andy kettle and county board delegates use common sense and bring an end to it all unlike gerry harington when he was in charge he could have brought an end to it when the vote finished level last time and he as chairman had the casting vote

Tis a sad day for Dublin GAA.all the smaller clubs in Dublin will find it hard to hold onto players now that you're able to transfer.~PHS

Hard to have a rule either way on this. Players shouldn't be allowed transfer at the drop of a hat but County Boards shouldn't have veto's for as long as what happened here either. It was obvious even to outsiders he wanted to move and would never go back to O'Tooles. GAA players are amateur, there is no financial loss here, and he showed how genuinly he wanted to move so he should have been allowed to transfer years ago.

PS Eventhough it was a pointhless thread, he would easily make the Kerry midfield but I'm sure he's happier with the chances of the Dubs winning the All-Ireland in 2011 than Kerry in any case...

If he is leaving to further his career i think this is a mistake.
If he has had a genuine fall out with the club that is irreconcilible then its fair to let him transfer.

He couldnt go back and play for O'Tooles after what happened

Either way it's all over for the lad now...

Time to get that XL Dub jersey at the ready... I'd have in the squad against Cork on Saturday

He's going to be on top of the world right now after that mess... no better time to get him onto the field.

its hard to know where to stand on this one. one thing is for sure is that fennell was made victim to the arbitrary nature of decisions at the bureaucracy level of GAA politics. whether one agrees or not is hard to call. we've seen in dublin football that the wealthy and prestigious clubs snap up the best players available from out-side dublin and that fact has been well documented on this site. a worrying trend would be if the top players in dublin with smaller clubs could start to pick and choose where they play. its all too easy to say that everyone has the right to play where they want but its another story when the transfers are going in one direction only, be that from smaller clubs to stronger clubs. its a difficult one to call but i for one would like to see fennell fulfill his potential as an intercounty midfielder and push to be MDMA'a partner the middle.
