866442 There is NO such thing as freelance journalism or independent thinking in the Irish media. EVERY media group has an agenda whether to it's owner or shareholders. This is why one media baron or group owning ALL of a country's media outlets is very dangerous for democracy and an anathema to an open and fair society. In the South Independent Media has virtually a cartel and nothing is allowed outside it's rabidly right wing, Unionist, big business agenda. Likewise in Britain Rupert Murdoch and his News Corporation are seeking to buy over a major shareholding in SKY TV giving them total control over the satellite broadcaster. To achieve total power Murdoch is also looking to kill off the BBC which he sees as the major obstacle to him holding outright dominance and control over the British media; many British journalists see this and are determined to stop him. ALL Murdoch newspapers continually attack the BBC as a 'liberal pinko socialist' organisation when in effect the BBC just doesn't play to Murdoch's Thatcherite agenda but it's all part of a bigger plan. Murdoch wants the Tories to break up the BBC to make Murdoch's plan easier. In the South Sir Anthony O'Reilly has held sway for decades but is being opposed now by Denis O'Brien who is looking to take a major shareholding in the Independent group. Whether this succeeds and changes the stance of Independent Media is another thing because as I said there is NO such thing as a free media in the 26 counties. During the Celtic Tiger O'Reilly's newspapers pushed out big, colourful daily and weekend property supplement advertising brochures. It earned big advertising money for the Independent group and they were as culpable for the housing bubble as the rest. Unfortunately there is little scope for a REALLY 'Independent' media group in Ireland because those with their own narrow sinister agendas crush them at birth.

I agree, although there is little free media anywhere now. A lot of the Murdoch tabloids have just become a running joke with t**s. Did you see the 10 O Clock Live rant on his ownership of the "actual" Sky?

I didn't think students read morning newspapers considering they don't see the light of day until 1pm

Don't diss Ireland's Own liathroidboy. My late Nan, God bless her and keep her, read that and I used to have a glance at it occasionally. Nothing sexy or sensational in there, but a nice little publication either way.

The only paper Id ever buy is the Irish news, but purely for the GAA coverage.

I used to buy the Irish Star on a Sunday for the sport, but that stopped last year for me. It was the day after Ireland beat England in Twickenham, and the main story on the back page of the IRISH Star was that Wayne Bridge didn't shake John Terry's hand. That was enough for me.

For news, id read many of the news websites rather than buying papers. I find reading message boards such as this one, allows me to come to my own conclusions and opinions than reading a paper with certain agendas.

I read in sunday indo as GAA and sport coverage very good, main part can be very negative and the writers fail to give facts to make ur own opinion, but its analysis columns can be interesting if u want a laugh.

Times is good red but sunday times has poor gaa coverage IMO an is very like the times in england.

the examiner is a good paper and gaa coverage is good esp for championship time.

but its hard to find a good, non-left or non-right winged paper unfortunately and they all have an agenda, internet seems to be way its going in next decade...

dhorse,

I feels tv news gives a better description of whats going on. In newspapers the journo's are more preoccupied with giving their opinion than the actual story.. I now TV news can sometimes also be a bit off but i feel i can decifer the manure.. Whereas in newspapers you're swimming in it

Sunday Times is a London paper, with an Irish edition published for the Irish market. It's basically the English paper with an Irish front page, and 4/5 pages of Irish articles.
It has no connection with the Irish Times that is published Monday-Saturday.

When it comes to newspapers, I'd be sunk without the internet, most mornings I can breeze through the Examiner, the NY Times, The Boston Globe, Irish Times/Indo, without spending a penny. Easy to take for granted, its an amazing facility to be able to avail of.
I get the feeling that alot of Irish newspaper columnists don't read alot themselves, especially the ones that try to use humour, Indo columnists in particular. I've thought of some of them as Christopher Hitchens wannabees in the past, but that's actually being too harsh on Hitchens. The likes of Ian O'Doherty try to use humor, but are just clumsy and end up falling way short, inducing a cringe rather than a giggle; he could do with reading a David Sedaris or Sarah Vowell book, it might help. Myers has kind of a scattergun approach, just shoots so much contradictory stuff out there, that every so often he hits the bulls-eye. The rest of the time, he tends to look silly, especially when he tries to employ humor devices. And hyperbole can get old, fast.
