Is Rugby now Ireland's 'National Game'?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

"This is Rugby Country" all the adds now boom at us (even though the Italians damm near scuppered this notion on Saturday!!!!). However the GAA needs to smarten its act in relation to promoting the game through the media as the hype & supposed glamour attached to rugby will have a serious effect on the playing numbers in already under presure clubs.

What a ridiculous statement, Gaa players are pretty much the same as any old joe soap,A Farmer or a postman people can relate to them,Munster rugby came across a remarkable bunch of players the last 10 years the likes of Hayes and Quinlan,O Gara and Flannery people can relate to them, but now who can converse with Luke Fitzgearld,Rob Kearney,Dricco and Heaslip, see the average Joe dont drink in Lillies every Saturday night, date Models and have there head stuck up there "you know what""they are pretty much like every politican in this country, out of touch with the common man. As for Rory Best and Trimble who time and time again disrespect Amhrán na bhFiann. As for This is Rugby Country..this rugby country dont have a national anthem or national flag

All the hype and gloss in the world will have little effect if the league and championships are still run in archaic formats, hurling in particular. Does anyone know if two teams or one will get promoted from the NHL Division 2 this year? "This is Hurling Country" ads would have less effect in Limerick or Clare if they had to spend another year in Division 2. Ditto for kids in Armagh or Leitrim who might never get to see players from their counties play at the top level.
Organize our premier competitions properly, so they've got a logical structure, and allow players from the entire country a chance to compete at the highest level. Then apply the glitter.

Not yet, but the GAA would want to pull one out fairly quickly. The current ads and the whole Area22 campaign last year are pretty captivating. The new sponsors haven't really gone for promotion of the games and their campaigns arev more about association. We're moving back into liver fluke and round baler territory with the last two

well doubt it will sustain its current popularity if the games remain as borin as the weekend.france scotland was ok but other two games were shocking.Honestly don t think i ve seen a really good game is last 3or4 years.there are no games even comin close to the likes of munster wasps semi final or the leinster toulouse game in 06. it is fast becomin a very borin game to me. maybe others disagree but i used to really look forward to rugby games but now i just think they are all pedestrian over and back across the field with very little happenin.

Jeez you sure do like your lazy stereotypes shea. GAA players are postmen and farmers, Munster players don't go out with models or to VIP nightclubs and Leinster players are out of touch with the common man. What a load of absolute nonsense...

Anyone I know thinks that 'This is rugby country' stuff is cringeworthy.
And that includes lads that actually play rugby.

In fairness to Rob Kearney, he played GAA at senior club level in Co louth if I'm not mistaken. It's unfair to say people can't relate to the Leinster players like the Munster players singled out. Shane Horgan played Minor for Meath and is a gentleman, Shane Byrne played GAA with a junior club in Wicklow since his rugby career ended as did Eric Miller who togged out for his local GAA club.

Rugby is moving forward and into traditional GAA areas north and south - fair play to them - it is up to the gaa to counteract this -
in the north there are men playing rugby who never would have - corner back for armagh against dublin on saturday night played underage for leinster - would he have gone back to gaa if the rugby worked out for him,
gaa doesn't have the international demension that rugby has but club rugby is brutal - look at the figures for sat night, 8,000 in castlebar, 9,000 in armagh, 6,000 in derry etc, with little or no promotion the gaa pulls in the crowds
danny lynch is not a pr expert - we should be highlighting our product and marketing well - fair play to those involved with dublin and playing their games in croke park,
rte and certain sections of the media were educated at rugby schools and therefore give rugby a lot of attention and focus even when the season is over, despite the heinkein cup and 6 nations how many people have seen a rugby game live!!!!!!!!

Pathetic stereotypes Shea. To answer your question the kids over Olafs GAA club in Dublin seem to have no problem talking to Luke Fitzgerald, he is regularly up there handing out medals to the underage teams as he is a former player. But hey im sure you know these guys well enough to judge them.....

Its not easy for the GAA to compete in a biased environment where the media is heavily in favour of promoting rugby. Sir Tony O'Reilly is responsible for this of course.

What are you basing this on? Your own lazy and ignorant stereotypes? As for Trimble and Best not respecting Amhrán na bhFiann what part of silently and respectfully standing through an anthem I presume they don't consider their own constitutes a lack of respect exactly?
