A Soldiers song is the national anthem of the 26 counties and not the entire Island, so as quite a few people have rightfully pointed out here the IRFU are perfectly within their right not to play amhrain na bhfiann before rugby matches, and while a lot of people may not like Ireland's Call it is still a neutral anthem. I can't believe that so many people get caught up in what anthem is played before rugby matches, if we are insisting that amhrain na bhfiann is only played, then we should be called the Republic of Ireland or the 26 counties for at the end of the day that is what our national anthem represents.

Yes, love rugby. Great sport. I can't say I'm an avid Ulster follower but I like to see all Irish provinces do well and attend the odd Munster and Leinster matches. I've been to the last 3 world cups and NZ is looking good. I don't have a problem with two anthems as there are two cultures involved and this must be respected. 80% of rugby supporters are good skins - the other 20% are mostly insecure pretenders with x2 pairs of shoes, a provincial jersey and a stinking attitude. These sheep only get under your skin if you let them.

Your spot on there gilly but unfortunately theres too many people on this island in denial about that. Personally I honestly, genuinely couldn't give a monkeys what anthem was played before the games, I feel like someones who's stuck right smack bang in the middle of a mind numbingly boring argument. Of course then people say 'well why did you join the argument if you don't care', well because I have to hear that bloody argument every time I go to an Ireland match, its sooooooooo boring, just watch the game.

Getting back to the theme of the thread, I very much enjoy rugby. Played a wee bit with Omagh Accies when I was 17-18 and really enjoyed it. The rules are not all that complex if you take a bit of time to read them. Granted, the scrum is now becoming a farce with the length of time it now takes to get one completed. I still prefer to watch gaelic football or hurling but would not speak ill of rugby.

With regards to anthems, who really cares? I don't particularly like Ireland's call, however I can understand how protestant ulstermen may be offended by Amhrain na Bhfiann. If lads from the Falls Rd can stand for GSTQ at Windsor Park without it unduly bothering them all the same, then I'm sure the Ulster lads could do the same (and did so for many years) but its not really that big a deal.

Flower of Scotland is not an official National Anthem and neither is the Welsh, Land of our Fathers .Granted, these songs traditionally go back a long way.

Nevertheless, the Irish are not doing anything much different to either of these Nations.

the one about the tree in the bog would be nice to get things going at half time.

What do some posters want, even more segregation with two Rugby teams on this island? Personally I think having Catholics and Protestants, Nationalists and Unionists playing side by side and alongside each other in the stand supporting the same team is a good thing. Flags and anthems come a distant second to this in my view

All we need is a more rousing tune than the dirge that is Irelands Call. Just look at the French team when La Marseillaise is blaring out, the chests are out and they are raring to go, makes me want to go out and kick somebodies head in!! Watch the Ireland team, its all so 'safe', bland and inoffensive, how's that supposed to motivate them, should stick on King of the Faeries by the Horlsips, that'll waken them up!

Could do a good weekend in rome no bother although livigno would be more my territory. Alas rugby does nothing for me, but live and and let live i say.

I agree that nothing would get you going before a match like your own anthem. So why not play GSTQ as well as Amhrán na bhFiann. They already play two songs before home matches and this way each player and fan gets to hear their anthem before the match

play two anthems then is that it , sure why dont we just split the irish jersey in half , and have it half in english with the rose , that really makes a lot of logic plunkett... one word missing in the link of all of this ... one word ...BACKBONE BACKBONE BACKBONE , there is no backbone .
