859440 I am a Dub with Kerry parents and they always said the 70's was the greatest era for GAA and that the Dublin team was the fiercest and most sporting rival they have ever encountered as Kerry people?

Maybe it is our blinkered view Gerry... or maybe it's the fact that we reached 6 All Ireland Finals in a row during that period... no back door then man.

Yeah I'm just biased...

Jimbo I don't think anyone is denying that Dublin team was legendary, 6 ai appearances in a row as you said, is that not enough for you without wanting to be seen as the saviours of the GAA as well.

Its a bit Henry Sellers to be honest.

Paul Galvin is saving fashion and spray-on jeans which is much more important.

Well the thread is all about Dublin and Kerry being the saviours of the GAA, for someone who couldn't care less about the thread topic you are doing a lot of protesting in it.

I tried that but I started thinking about Cavan after about 15 seconds, i think we saved the GAA in 1947 and so do my parents who are also from Cavan, we played in a lot of AI finals but its probably just that we're biased

I'm talking about something completly different. I was responding to Gerrys email about what his parents Kerry parents said to him about the 1970's Dublin v Kerry games.

How on earth would Dublin being a great team in the 1970's save the GAA? As stated before on this thread... evry decade has their great teams... sure what about CAVAN! The thread was set up in jest.. right?

I just don't understand the "saving the GAA" bit, saving it from what, alien abduction, falling off the cliffs of Moher, was it about to be mugged in a dark alley, how and why was the GAA in need of saving? Whatever about the series of games between Kerry and Dublin for the best part of that decade, GAA was thriving in Ulster despite the obvious, we didn't need 'saving', we dutifully and dilligently kept the GAA flag flying high against the odds. This 'myth' should be consigned to the dustbin for what it is, some fanciful talk by misty eyed fans harking back to the good old days!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOy8R_8f3Io&feature=related - 1 minute in and it might clear up the Henry Sellers thing.

As for saving the GAA well I'd reckon that almost every decade had some sort of rivalry or revival which spurred it on. In the 60's and 70's it was the Kerry - Dublin rivalry, then the emergence of Offaly and the 5 in a row bid in the early 80's. Before that the was the great Cavan, Galway and Down teams, and after them it was the Dublin - Meath rivalry which was reignited in the late 80's. In the 90's we had the emergence of Donegal and Derry to win their first All Irelands, likewise a decade later we had Armagh and Tyrone coming to the fore.

From a hurling point of view the 90's was also spurred on by Offaly, Wexford and Clare, one of greatest periods of hurling I've ever seen with some of the most skillful teams of recent times competing against the traditional powers of Kilkenny, Tipp and Cork.

Did Dublin and Kerry save the GAA? No. The GAA will never need saving. What they did do though, was stoke a renewed passion into the game, especially from a neutral point of view, just like many teams did before them, and like many have done, and will continue to do after them.

As we all know the back door has saved the GAA…

It's given a chance for the less untraditional counties to win Sam/Liam... Although it has helped Kerry to stay on top in the football

But thankfully there are a couple of exceptions to that rule.
