Not quite the Sigerson, but the Freshers Championship from today, with Queens beating Athlone IT at a gale-struck Dub. Didnt want to start a whole thread for this but some of you might be interested in seeing a bit of midweek football action - link

Roscommon players that play for DCU-Donal Shine, Cathal Cregg, David O'Gara, David Keenan, Stephen Ormsby, Neil Collins and Darren O'Malley. Niall Carthy is up there to not sure if he plays for them though! A lot of intercounty players there and Colm Begley is there as well.

Paul Galvin's much publicised Sigerson return to claim the medal he never won petered out at Clontarf today. He didnt even make the subs and DIT were dumped out by a brilliant UL with messrs Niblock and Moran to the fore.

link - UL manager Declan O'Keeffe says they were 'in turmoil' while DIT were winning the Ryan Cup by 13 points. David Moran is also interviewed here and seen scoring some superb points.

Paul Galvin or any mature student should not be allowed to play college gaa. its a joke
all this talk of burn out and closed season and yet this shambolic competition setup still goes on.

colleges gaa should be for 4 year undergrads only.

I agree. Its totally unfair putting say a 19 year old second year student in against the likes of Galvin.

Sigerson is also played early in the year, thus poor pitches and bog standard football. All this adds up to is coaches picking the bigger stronger older players, instead of the younger developing skillfull ones, as many students are just not ready to play against grown men. It's exactly the opposite of what this competition should be about. A serious amount of big unskillfull rugby players who are selected on my college side simply because they will handle the wet and muck better and are better suited to playing against grown men.

Yes sashman i agree great competiton some serious quality players in it. Also gives some players from smaller counties to play against the top footballers in the country.. I think people who complain about teams drafting in superstars are wrong. The lad is choosing to go back and study to try and further their education. and if they are in a job i think this shows even better commitment so therfore they should be allowed to play away at this great competition

Anyone else think that NUIG are worth an outside punt for the Sigerson? They've got some top class players and a good manager too.

Whats the deal with tickets to the final? Is it pay on the gate? Never been to a Sigerson or Fitzgibbon Final before but I'm over next weekend and intend on heading down to UCD.

Anybody at the Sigerson Final? Pretty awful first half but a stunning comeback from UUJ. UCC looked paralysed for ten minutes but UUJ couldn't sustain their purple patch. Exciting finish.

Agree 100% Tongo not a great game but brilliant comeback by Jordanstown just fell short. Both teams had very good backlines hence the low scoring. It was obvious that UUJ had no other free scoring forward other than McManus and when UCC put the shackles on him they were in trouble. Over the three days UCC deserved it the commitment they put in for eachother was immence.

A massive well done to UCC. Just goes to show that signing an array of county superstars won't garuntee you success.

I watched all the games myself, have to say I didnt expect UCC to win it. The first game I saw was UUJ vs Carlow IT, and I was sure nobody would stop UUJ, they were very impressive. Then UCC caused a massive upset by beating DCU. They handled Michael Murphy relatively well, and once they edged in front they literally brought every player back and threw themselves at everything. Some of the best defending Ive ever seen.

My own beloved UCD were unlucky not to beat them in the semi final. We dispatched NUIG with ease. The semi was a cracking game and could have gone either way, but UCC wanted it more. UUJ struggled against Maynooth in the other semi final, but pulled away in the last quarter.

And so it was a UUJ/UCC final, and fair play to UCC, they won it solely on heart and determination.

Agree nacellabeaga, think that is one of the standout points of this year's competition, none of the three big Dublin sides made it to the final despite possessing a litany of inter-county stars.
